Smart Pleased So Far With Young Cornerbacks

By

One of the main questions marks coming into this season is who will replace cornerbacks Dre Kirkpatrick, DeQuan Menzie and Phelon Jones.

While the Tide defensive backfield does return senior Robert Lester and sophomore Vinnie Sunseri who played a lot at the end of last season, the Tide still has few holes to fill.

But defensive coordinator Kirby Smart doesn’t seem to be worried about those holes in the Tide secondary.

"We have the bodies there, we have the body types we want, we just have to give those guys some experience," Smart said.

"Thank goodness with the way we practice and this camp we have, they'll have plenty of opportunities to play some ball and do some things we've got to do."

Those bodies include: junior-college transfers Deion Belue and Travell Dixon, junior John Fulton, redshirt freshmen Jabriel Washington, Bradley Sylve and true freshman Geno Smith not to mention HaHa Clinton-Dix and five-star freshman Landon Collins; all will be battling for playing time in the Bama defensive back-field this season.

Back in 2010 when the Tide was defending national champions, the biggest question mark and the biggest problem that season was the Tide’s young secondary. Although the defense would still finish as one of the best defenses in the country, they at times struggled in the secondary against teams like South Carolina and Arkansas which put up big numbers that year.

Smart and Nick Saban are hoping with at least some experience back there this year combined with the young talent, that the Tide will avoid a repeat of 2010.
