ESPN’s SEC blogger Chris Low reported last night that Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has withdrawn his name for consideration for the head coaching position at Southern Miss.

Low said Smart met with Southern Miss officials and was thought to be the favorite, but decided he wasn’t ready to make a move.

According to earlier reports, Smart was also considered for the Ole Miss and Texas A & M openings as well.

The Golden Eagles are now turning to South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson who has Alabama ties as well.
