Alabama Defeats Detroit 62-54 With New Starting Lineup

By

After losing two straight to Georgetown and Dayton, the Tide bounced back Sunday night with a 62-54 win over Detroit at home. Even though the Titans come into Tuscaloosa with a 5-6 record, they showed why they were picked to finish second in the Horizon League behind powerhouse Butler. In fact, they had already knocked off Big East foe St. Johns.

The key was a new starting lineup. Coach Anthony Grant started another one of his talented freshmen, Nick Jacobs, at center. The result was a big lineup that Detroit could not handle. The three big men, senior JaMychal Green (21 pts), junior Tony Mitchell (15 pts), and Nick Jacobs (13 pts) - filled it up to the tune of 49 points.

Out of the starting lineup was guard, Rodney Cooper. Coach Grant attributed the Jacobs start more to the work ethic of Jacobs.

"I felt Nick earned it with what he's done on the practice court and being able to transfer that to the game," Grant said. In regards to the game play of Jacobs, Grant said, "He brought a physicality and a presence down low. He did a pretty good job on the defensive end."

High praise indeed from a coach who thrives on defense.

Alabama defense indeed came to life by clamping down on Detroit in the first half. Detroit was the 6th team out of 10 games this year that Alabama held below 25 points in the first half.

Alabama snaps its 2 game losing streak and snapped Detroit's 2 game winning streak.

I think this new starting lineup will play favorably for the Tide as we enter into the SEC schedule. If Alabama gets better as the season progresses like it did last year, watch out NCAAs!
