Crimson Tide Romped Arkansas in a 35-7 Victory!
ByIt was an awesome victory in the first SEC game of the year. The defense was near perfect, except the TD pass & a few more pass completions, but overall it was a romp in the park as the Crimson Tide stomped its way to a 35-7 victory.
The offensive side of the ball was a bit different than we had seen in years past for the Crimson Tide, with a wildcat reverse-type play going for a TD throw to Julio Jones (who scored for the first time since last year's Georgia game)
Greg McElroy had a specacular game passing in which he completed 17 of 24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns. The running game was a little suspect with the offensive line not able to open holes as effectively as in games past (especially when compared to last year's line), but freshman Trent Richardson pleased the crowd in taking off in a 52 yard TD jaunt down the sidelines after breaking four arm tackles by the hapless Arkansas defense.
Greg McElroy connected with Marquis Maze as he blazed down the right sideline for an 80-yard score that electrified the crowd and took the wind out of the sails of the Arkansas sideline. Coach Petrino said it best when he summarized it after the game, saying "We didn't really believe that we could come in and win the game... When you don't believe you can come in and win the game, you drop passes, you don't do the things you've been coached to do, you don't do the things you normally do."
One sour note for the sharp looking Tide squad was the fact that there was one injury of note to Dont'a Hightower. One of the top tacklers in the stellar linebacker crew, the injury is thought to be very serious but extent of the injury won't be confirmed until later today after an MRI is done. Hopefully it will not be season ending, but Saban seems to know from the reaction of his star player when he said.. "We're doing an MRI (today). The initial prognosis is not good," Saban said. "We're hopeful it won't be bad, but we'll know for sure today... There's a guy right there that doesn't get talked about enough. He's a great leader on our team and one of our best football players on our entire team, the best pass rusher we have. I hate to see any player get hurt ever, but that one right there is a good one."
