I think Coach Saban enjoyed this last victory a little more than most. You can see it after the Gatorade bath. He may not admit it, but the sweet satisfaction of winning a national championship this year, after being down for the count following the LSU loss last November, is pretty much the highlight of his career.

We all know that Coach Saban was ready in November to get revenge on Les Miles after the big loss last year. Leading up to the LSU game in 2010, Saban still had Alabama in the hunt for the national championship. With one loss to South Carolina, Les Miles was coming to town with the Bengal Tigers. Unfortunately, after a fake punt & a timely reverse by LSU, Alabama bitterly lost 24-21.

Losing for the second time to Les Miles on Nov. 2011, 9-6, had to have been very hard for Nick Saban to take. The Mad Hatter played it safe in November 2011, after all the tricks of 2010, and came away with a 2 game winning streak on Saban. Going to New Orleans with the possibility of a 3 game losing streak to Les Miles had to have been the ultimate incentive for Saban.

Following the victory in the Superdome, Coach Saban displayed a level of elated emotion that is unprecedented in his tenor at Alabama.

He danced when the Gatorade hit his back. He even said that he "loved it." The moment was surreal and a huge grin was all over his face following the dominant victory. The dominating victory over his arch nemesis was sweet as it gets in collegiate football. For the first time ever, a BCS shut-out that ended all speculation about who was the best team in the country.

It was Coach Saban's finest moment.

Coach Saban was going to enjoy every minute of the after-game celebration. So much so, he was up until 3AM the next morning celebrating.

To Coach Saban, I have one thing to say... "ROLL TIDE!"

Former head football coach at the United States Air Force Academy from 1984 to 2006, Fisher DeBerry racked up the most wins and highest winning percentage (.608) in Air Force football history. His best year was 1985, when Air Force finished #8 in the AP with a 12-1 record. He duplicated that record in 1998, but only finished #13.

Today, in retirement, Coach DeBerry a respected coach & authority on football, he is offering his opinion on who should play in college football's biggest game.

Coach DeBerry is adamant about the fact that it "should be who we feel are the two best TEAMS" (emphasis his), regardless of conference play. He said he looks at who "week in and week out" are the best teams.

"It is clear in my mind that LSU right now should be the #1 team because they beat Alabama", Fisher then said, "yet Alabama is that (motioning with his finger close together) close to being number one. It would be an exciting national championship game."

We agree with you on this one coach!

Last Friday, Anthony Grant & Wendell Hudson talked Alabama basketball. Both teams have reason for optimism this season. The men's team returns one of the top players in the country, 2nd team All American JaMychal Green. Green spoke at Media days and spoke about his intentions to step up and set the example for the new blood on Alabama's team. Alabama comes in the season ranked 17th in the nation.

JaMychal Green has looked impressive in the off-season in playing for USA Basketball in the World University Games. This summer, Green came in second on the team in scoring with 12.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as the squad played to a 7-1 record. He lost 17 pounds in the off-season, so look for him to be able to run the floor better and have more endurance.

The ladies team is expected by many to be the best that Wendell Hudson has had since he first became the ladies head coach in 2007. Led by senior leader Ericka Russell, the Tide ladies look to improve mightily this year. Hudson said one of the keys to successful recruiting as of late came from the impact of Nick Saban on the program. Coach Saban has went over and beyond his call of duty to meet the recruits and spend time with them. Hudson indicated that Alabama has signed three junior college All-Americans for instant impact, and two of them were on a 32-1 championship team last year, and another player was on a national championship team in junior college. So there is proven winners in place this year to take Alabama's ladies basketball to a new level of play.

Looking forward to seeing both teams take it to the hoops.

I am loving it! The first profile is about a Alabama legend that I had very little knowledge of, however many of the older generation knew him very well (even if they did not follow Alabama football!) He was a great football player who saved Alabama in the 4th quarter from allowing the potential game-winning TD Washington, however he was also very famous as leading movie star who was the hero of an entire generation. He is well known for playing "Billy The Kid" in the movies and was a famous gun slinger.

If you don't know much about Alabama history, and even if you do, you will absolutely love this book about Alabama football history. It is definitely a great read.

"Johnny Mack Brown is best remembered as perhaps the first athlete who successfully pursued a motion picture career. As a football player at the University of Alabama, Brown played in one of the most important games in southern football history. Until Alabama defeated Washington 20-19 in the 1926 Rose Bowl, southern football did not enjoy the prestige it holds today. The 1926 Rose Bowl provided the first opportunity for southern football to gain national recognition. Trailing 12-0 at halftime, Alabama changed its offensive strategy to utilize Brown's pass catching abilities. In the third quarter, Brown was on the receiving end of 61-yard and 38-yard touchdown pass plays. Alabama won the game. Alabama posted a 10-0 record while shutting out eight opponents. Brown's play in the Rose Bowl inspired the game's head linesman to say, "Johnny Mack Brown has the sweetest feet I have ever seen. The way he managed to elude Washington tacklers in his long runs was marvelous. He has a weaving elusive style that is beautiful to watch." After watching two weeks of college football one thing is certain: The defense that is being played out there is terrible. How do you explain scores like this over the weekend: 41-35, 45-42, 35-31. Even the Iowa/Iowa State game got into the 40’s.

I looked up NCAA defensive stats this morning and found only two SEC teams in the top 10 in total defense and only one (Alabama) was in the top five. What happened to defense in the SEC?

While certain media types fall all over themselves praising the great games this weekend, no one seems to care that defense in the SEC has fallen all over the league.

Teams like Mississippi State, Auburn, Georgia, and South Carolina, all ranked in the top 25 (except Georgia) and none of them are near the top 25 or even top 30 in total defense; think about that ya’ll.

Here is something else for you to chew on; Vanderbilt and Kentucky are higher ranked in total defense then the teams I just mentioned.

But the teams I mentioned garner a lot of praise because they can outscore anybody. Alabama on the other hand which just dominated a Big Ten team, basically gets no mention at all because they just went out there and did their job.

There was no exciting last minute goal line stand or a tremendous Hail Mary throw to win the game, just total dominance which no one seems to appreciate these days.

Keep this in mind folks, those great offensive teams I mentioned, probably won’t be playing for the national championship in January. Great offense might win you some games, but it’s the defense that wins championships.

There have been many memorable moments in the Alabama/Penn State rivalry over the years. There was the 1979 goal line stand made famous in the Sugar Bowl that won Alabama the national championship that no one will ever forget, but the two probably still most talked about plays in this rivalry took place in 1983 and 1989-one resulting in a loss for the Crimson Tide, the other kept an undefeated season going.

If you are an Alabama fan over the age of 35, you all know the name Preston Gothard. Gothard was going to be the hero in the 1983 game after the Tide came back from a 34-7 deficit. As you all may recall, the touchdown pass quarterback Walter Lewis threw to Gothard in the back of the end zone was called no good and Alabama’s comeback that afternoon was over and the Tide lost 34-28; as replays would show over the years that was a terrible call made by the officials.

Gothard said in a recent article that he hopes that it doesn’t come down to that this weekend.

"Let's hope it doesn't come down to that," Gothard said. "I'm going to be there, first trip back. I'll have to leave the stadium if it comes down to the last play."

What some forgot and I didn’t realize, was that Penn State had been called offsides and the Tide had one more shot at the endzone and STILL couldn’t get in, but we will all remember Gothard’s play as the one that should have won Bama the ball game.

Younger Bama fans probably remember the 1989 thriller between the Tide and the Nittany Lions when Tide linebacker Thomas Rayam blocked the go-ahead field goal that more then likely would have won Penn State the game.

Rayam’s block preserved Alabama’s 17-16 victory. I remember listening to that game and hearing the excitement in Jerry Ducan’s voice when he said “He blocked it Eli!”

Rayam said in the same article that he is still reminded to this day by Tide fans about that play.

"Every time I talk about it, I still get chills," Rayam said.

And nobody who watched Alabama football in the late 70s could ever forget the "Goalline Stand" for the national championshio to win the 1979 National Championship.

It was fourth and goal from the one-foot line with a national championship on the line. Penn State chose to power it in, but Alabama would have none of it. Again, Alabama surged backward through the Penn State line, and Guman was hit in the hole by Barry Krauss and Murray Legg, where he was stopped dead in his tracks.

The Alabama defense had held after a thunderous collision just short of the goal line. Krauss, the man who delivered the brunt of the hit, was knocked unconscious and temporarily lost feeling in his extremities, but he would get up and run off the field under his own power.

The play went down as one of the greatest ever in college football history. Bear Bryant walked off the field with his last national championship.

I was not even born yet, but my dad loves to talk about this era of Alabama football. It was 1960's Alabama football.  He even has old year books of Alabama from that era.  He can tell story after story about those days.  This video below is right up his alley

 With 3 official national championships (and an 11-0 season in 1966 that did not result in being #1), the Alabama football team dominated college football with Bear Bryant at the helm.

Watch this video about the Alabama teams of the 60's as presented by Keith Jackson. You will hear stories about Bear like when he kicked the locker room door off its hinges in 1965 to stories of close games. The video is a fascinating look into this dominant era of Alabama football.

Alabama fans are more in-favor of Auburn losing than rooting for a fellow SEC team. Hatred runs deep in the heart of dixie when it comes to the Iron Bowl, and the vitriol continues to flow even after 2 weeks after the greatest rivalry game in football.

In an unscientific poll taken today, we asked the question, "Do you want Auburn to beat Oregon for the national championship?"

Alabama fans had three choices:

  • HECK NO! I HATE AUBURN
  • YES! I want Auburn to Represent the State of Alabama & SEC Well!
  • I don't care one way or the other what the the Aubarn does..

The answer may or may not surprise many. Here are the results out of the first 100 votes:

Why? As unsavory as it may seem, Auburn is in fact #1 in the BCS right now. Alabama needs the farmboys to stay in the top spot to have the computer juice to get to #2 or #1 in the BCS.

I know.. I know.. take it one game at a time, however I do believe that Alabama & Auburn will win-out until the Iron Bowl. Can you imagine the national attention if Alabama is in the top 5 at that time and Auburn is at #1? It will be all-out-war for the chance to play for not only the SEC championship, but also for the crystal ball in Glendale, AZ.

Today, Auburn plays what many would consider a classic "trap-game." Coming off actually a great game by superstar QB Cam Newton, the Auburn Tigers will need to be pulled by to earth by super-laidback coach, Gene Chizik. The stakes could not be higher for Auburn and Alabama. Before you can eat the feast, you must set the table. So I am looking for Auburn to help set-the-table for the Iron Bowl to be special this year.

You can bet that Houston Nutt however has different plans. He has been known to pull off upsets over his tenure at both Ole Miss and Arkansas when you least expect him to.

In 2008, Nutt's Ole Miss Rebels travelled to the heart of Gator country in Gainesville, FL as 22-point underdogs and handed the eventual national champion Florida Gators their only loss all season long.

In 2007, Houston Nutt and his feisty Arkansas Razorbacks defeated the No. 1 LSU Tigers 50-48 in triple overtime on the road in Baton Rouge as 2 touchdown underdog. LSU proceeded to go on and win the national championship that year. (The year that Les Miles famously said that the LSU Tigers were “undefeated in regulation”).

In 2006, Auburn was #2 and was soundly drubbed by Coach Nutt's Arkansas squad to the tune of 27-10 at Jordan-Hare, even though they came in as a 15-point underdog.

Houston Nutt has made a living out of carving up top teams. Auburn better watch out, because they haven't played nearly as well on the road as they have at home. Granted, Ole Miss is not top level competition (they lost to Jacksonville State this year by the way), however they are playing in Oxford and the #1 team always has a target on its back. The question now is this... will a Nutt team strike again? Will the #1 team come down?

Let's hope not. Bama needs a victory over a #1 on its resume.

As much as I hate to say it... "War Eagle!" until the Iron Bowl is here. Sad but true. We need to root for Auburn to help our chances on the national scene.

When the Iron Bowl rolls around... Then it is time for "fried pussycat" (as Cousin Eddie famously said in National Lampoon's Christmas vacation) on Iron Bowl day in the form of a "Tiger roast."

Nothing would be sweeter than a defeat over Auburn on the way to back-to-back national championships. Like I already said though... lets take it one game at a time.

There are a lot of games to be played before November 26 rolls around. But left-over eagle....errrr ...I mean turkey is always good the day after Thanksgiving!

With the help of big losses from Ohio State and Nebraska, the line in front of Alabama got shorter.

This week, the Crimson Tide is 8th in the first released BCS standings of the year. Also, it is seemingly in a lowly 3rd position in the SEC West standings; however keep in mind that Alabama still controls its fate. Win out, and Alabama will march like Sherman to Atlanta.

Alabama fans are cautiously optimistic of Alabama's chances after a "ho-hum" type of 23-10 victory over Ole Miss on Saturday. Also, don't forget that this isn't missed by the players at Alabama, and of course Nick Saban. There is definitely room for improvement on both sides of the ball. Sure, McElroy passed effectively on Ole Miss 17-for-25 for 219 yards and two touchdowns. But when you look closer, 85 yards was in one play to Trent Richardson. Alabama must get better.

Alabama's next shot to prove themselves worthy of the SEC & national championship rings comes on Saturday night, when they take on their hated rival, Tennessee, in what is sure to be a wild atmosphere in Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee is down this year with only a 2-4 record, but they are definitely not a push-over. Tennessee led LSU at the end of the game, only to lose a close fought game to the hands of the mad hatter himself, Les Miles. Knocking Alabama down a peg in the BCS would cause the goalposts to fall in Knoxville.

Tennessee was even a tough game last year when Bama took home the national championship. It took two blocked kicks by Mount Cody to preserve the victory over the volunteers.

If Alabama can win-out, the road to Atlanta will be one that could lead to Glendale, Arizona. However Alabama could still use some help. They need Oregon and/or Oklahoma to lose a game. UCLA has a chance on beating Oregon this weekend (they did beat Texas), but look for Oregon's best chance for a loss against #18 Arizona. Oklahoma, on the other hand, plays a tough #11 Missouri team that could be upset minded. Not to mention, Oklahoma will have to tangle with an undefeated state rival in Oklahoma State.

Keep in mind that when Florida won the national championship in 2008, it lost to Ole Miss at home. In fact, they dropped to #10 in the BCS that year. 

Nick Saban is no stranger to this game from his days at Louisana State. When the first BCS rankings came out in 2003, LSU was ranked 12th.   That year, they even lost a pivotal game to Florida 19-7 before roaring back to win-out the rest of the season & capture the crystal ball in defeating Oklahoma.

Consider this.  Oregon & Oklahoma have to go unbeaten or Alabama has to get beat again to keep Bama from travelling to Glendale.  For some reason, I just can't see either scenario happening.  Bama will be there in Glendale. 

Remember this, Tide nation.  There is a lot of football to be played this season, so don't give up on Alabama's chances to pick up another crystal football at the end of the year.  All hope is not lost.   Alabama is still in striking distance for the big game, but they have to play it one game at a time. Everything else will fall into place.
