Alabama is in a bye week this week and Coach Saban spoke to the media this morning (Wednesday) about those preparations. Alabama will be going over fundamentals once again today, and then will begin installing the game plan tomorrow for the LSU game.

Coach Saban said one of the things that Alabama tries to do in a bye week used to do first rest and then improve individually. It is also important to get together and improve the team chemistry during this time. They especially want to get all the players working together. 

After playing eight weeks in a row it is good to have a break, players were pretty banged up hidden into this bye week.

In fact, Alabama is reporting more injuries this week than pretty much any other previous week. Linebacker Alex Watkins has a broke arm, and will be out for the LSU game but will be back within 2 to 3 weeks. Also, Alabama lost backup offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio for the season following the Tennessee game. In recent weeks, backup running back Eddie Lacy has been gimpy with a turf toe. However, hopefully the rest will help him recover from that.

The offensive line's depth could be the biggest issue with the star freshman Kouandjio being out of the rotation. Coach Saban said that the line's continuity should do the same with the starters intact, but it does "affect our depth."

The good thing is that Anthony Steen is coming back from his concussion and will get to play against LSU.

Also, Alfred McCullough is essentially the utility infielder of the offensive line and will be able to fill in for a number of offensive line positions of necessary.

“When you have guys like that, especially in the offensive line, it makes it so much easier to be able to get your best guys out there,” Saban noted. “He is really helpful because he can play so many places.”

Coach Saban also spoke some on the improvement of LSU's quarterbacks over their career. He said it seemed like a long time ago that Rashaad Johnson intercepted Jarrett Lee 3 times, but Lee and Jordan are much improved and do a great job this year for LSU at quarterback. With their styles been a little bit different, with one guy been more of a runner (Jordan Jefferson), it makes it difficult to defend.

The team is working on fundamentals today and will start installing the gameplan for LSU tomorrow.  Will keep you posted.

Alabama's true freshman Trey DePriest & Vinnie Sunseri are knocking heads on special teams with a fire in their bellies and opponents are absolutely paying the price.   They need to be called the "BRUISE" Brothers, because of the bruising they are inflicting on the other teams returners.  

A lot of people knew these boys were ultra-talented coming out of high school.  Especially DePriest, he was a 5 star linebacker out ofOhio.   Sunseri was a 3 star. 

With all the recruiting stars to make any college coach salivate, these guys did not rest on their credentials.  They got to work and enrolled early in order to practice in the spring with the upperclassmen. 

Not that it really mattered.  Headhunters like this are born, not necessarily trained.    A player either has the mentality to do it well or not. 

In the first kickoff, Sunseri honed in on the first kickoff returner and put his "_ss in the dirt."  (as some coaches might say)  In the next kickoff, Depriest began punishing returners as well starting a string of fierce hits in special teams duty.   

DePriest definitely has a nose for the football.  He had a team high 10 tackles in the first game.  Incredibly six of those came on special teams.   That folks, is pure special teams talent. 

Coach Saban loves it.  He has said that it helps to have players who are dedicated to only special teams.   

“So it’s really, really good for our team when you have four or five guys who are really good special teams players who aren’t starters,” Saban said. “And that’s what they look forward to and that’s what they prepare for. That’s what they do. And you feel like they can do it as well as anybody on the team and you’re certainly not making any compromises to play them to hold somebody else out from doing it.”

Coach Saban went on to talk about how exceptional Trent Richardson was on special teams.   He would rather use players who are playing primarily special teams.   It prevents unnecessary injuries to offensive or defensive starters.

In the first half punt return against Penn State, Sunseri made the outstanding open field block that freed Maze up to take off up the sideline.   The game changed in Bama’s favor. 

 The enthusiasm is contagious. 

“Oh, man. Them boys go down there and bust some heads. And that’s what we need,” said cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick. “We build off their energy. They start the game off kickoff return. They’re gonna start the game off. Whatever kind of momentum or energy they bring to the game we’re gonna feed off of it.”

They just need to do a sequel to the "Blues Brothers" and call it the "BRUISE Brothers 2"   for Vinnie and Trey, the Alabama special teams mafia.

There have been many memorable moments in the Alabama/Penn State rivalry over the years. There was the 1979 goal line stand made famous in the Sugar Bowl that won Alabama the national championship that no one will ever forget, but the two probably still most talked about plays in this rivalry took place in 1983 and 1989-one resulting in a loss for the Crimson Tide, the other kept an undefeated season going.

If you are an Alabama fan over the age of 35, you all know the name Preston Gothard. Gothard was going to be the hero in the 1983 game after the Tide came back from a 34-7 deficit. As you all may recall, the touchdown pass quarterback Walter Lewis threw to Gothard in the back of the end zone was called no good and Alabama’s comeback that afternoon was over and the Tide lost 34-28; as replays would show over the years that was a terrible call made by the officials.

Gothard said in a recent article that he hopes that it doesn’t come down to that this weekend.

"Let's hope it doesn't come down to that," Gothard said. "I'm going to be there, first trip back. I'll have to leave the stadium if it comes down to the last play."

What some forgot and I didn’t realize, was that Penn State had been called offsides and the Tide had one more shot at the endzone and STILL couldn’t get in, but we will all remember Gothard’s play as the one that should have won Bama the ball game.

Younger Bama fans probably remember the 1989 thriller between the Tide and the Nittany Lions when Tide linebacker Thomas Rayam blocked the go-ahead field goal that more then likely would have won Penn State the game.

Rayam’s block preserved Alabama’s 17-16 victory. I remember listening to that game and hearing the excitement in Jerry Ducan’s voice when he said “He blocked it Eli!”

Rayam said in the same article that he is still reminded to this day by Tide fans about that play.

"Every time I talk about it, I still get chills," Rayam said.

And nobody who watched Alabama football in the late 70s could ever forget the "Goalline Stand" for the national championshio to win the 1979 National Championship.

It was fourth and goal from the one-foot line with a national championship on the line. Penn State chose to power it in, but Alabama would have none of it. Again, Alabama surged backward through the Penn State line, and Guman was hit in the hole by Barry Krauss and Murray Legg, where he was stopped dead in his tracks.

The Alabama defense had held after a thunderous collision just short of the goal line. Krauss, the man who delivered the brunt of the hit, was knocked unconscious and temporarily lost feeling in his extremities, but he would get up and run off the field under his own power.

The play went down as one of the greatest ever in college football history. Bear Bryant walked off the field with his last national championship.

What’s your favorite memory in this series?

I really look forward to seeing how the two "starting" quarterbacks, Philip Sims and AJ McCarron, react to game time situations for Alabama. Depending on how they perform in a real live game, the top performer could walk away with a starting position as the season wears on.

Coach Saban said on Alabama's statewide radio show "Hey Coach" Thursday night, "I hate to say it publicly, but it is a bit of an audition." So therefore the gauntlet has been laid down by the boss in T-town. However he did go on to say that if there is no separation in the quality of play that he has no problem in playing both players throughout the season.

My guess is that the job isn't one that will be won, however it will be one that would be "lost"by the player that is making the most mistakes. I'm hoping that both play so well that Alabama can rotate them both in games throughout the year. If that is the case, then they are both performing at a high level and not making mistakes (which is good!)

How Will the Defensive Line Perform?

The defensive line did not perform last year as it had in the previous year with Mount Cody at the helm, however Alabama brought in a new defensive line coach Chris Rumph from Clemson. There is a new attitude in the defensive line that should translate on game day. Rumph has been training the defensive line on how to be disciplined in the running game also being more aggressive in the pass rush. When things that he's doing this to show them how to use their hands more effectively to shed the blocker.

Look for better performance by the defensive line, however keep in mind that Kent State is a much smaller opponent. Look for Bama to push them around pretty easily. Penn State will be the first glance at real competition blocking our defensive line. How well they pressure the quarterback will make the secondary's job much easier in coverage. Also look for more linebackers participating on the pass rush for Alabama, especially Courtney Upshaw and Dont'a Hightower.

Newcomers to Keep an Eye on?

One of the newcomers that will be equally interesting to see and live action will be the big man himself, freshman five-star recruit Cyrus Kouandjio. The 6-foot-6, 322-pound offensive tackle prodigy is already listed as backup left tackle as a true freshman. Do you know how hard that is in the SEC conference? He's a big guy but talking to the other players, it's not just size that makes him such an effective player. It's his work ethic. He really wants to learn the system at Alabama and become a great player.

He's a really special player," said senior center William Vlachos. "Sometimes he looks like Orlando Pace out there at left tackle. Other times he looks like a freshman, as he should. I continue to bring him along...."

Speaking about Cyrus Kouandjio, starting TE Michael Williams said he was a "Bell cow." Williams went on to say about the freshman offensive tackle, "You don't see too many freshmen come in like that. Great feet. Great agility. You don't see too many 6-7, 320-pound men being able to move the way he does. He basically looks like me as a tackle, but he weighs 300. There's a lot of power built up in there somewhere."

At wide receiver, it will be interesting to see how redshirt freshman DeAndrew White does as a starting wide receiver. Coach Saban has been especially effluent with praise toward the young wide receiver in the preseason press conferences. Also keep an eye out to see if #8 Duron Carter has a chance to see playing time after joining the team late into fall practice. From seeing him practice, he is showing a lot of potential for helping replace Julio Jones as a big wide receiver this year.

Who Will Be the Most Exciting Player This Year?

I really think it will be a close race between Courtney Upshaw and Trent Richardson, however I think that Trent Richardson will have a breakout year in which he will win the Heisman Trophy. On offense, TR will be everywhere from the wildcat possibly even splitting out as a wide receiver, however he will primarily be used always to punish defenses with his slashing speed and upper body strength.

Conclusions to Be Drawn from Tomorrow's Game?

I don't believe the quarterback race will be determined by tomorrow's game because both players will play so well. The defensive line will most likely not be blocked very well, but we should see how well the defensive pass rush improves. The new wide receivers will be interesting to see and TR will be TR.

Its obviously a first game against a cupcake team, but keep an eye on these things to determine how well Alabama's team is gelling for a national title run.

From what I can see in the video, the kid is real fast and has a good eye for the ball. He drops back into coverage really well and seems to have the ability to also punish runners with great open field tackling.

Saban has a keen eye for talent. Alabama will have a good one in this young man. He looks a little wirey on the videos, but the fact is this boy is 6-foot-4, 220 lbs, so there is room on his frame for some muscle. He could develop into a real nice outside linebacker with his lateral speed & cover abilities, in fact jack LB might be a natural fit for this kid.

In the video, you will see him effortlessly take off for a 99 yard TD run and playfully fall to the ground like he is winded. Who ever heard of a defensive end that has that kind of speed? He is fast, he has a tall frame, and he can flat out make a difference in a football game. His coach said he has never seen a player of his caliber before.

When asked, all his head coach, family, and friends have nothing but good things to say about J.D (as they call him) on and off the field. True to his name, he is known as a bit of a clown, and well liked socially at his school.

He hasn't chosen a school to Naturally, his mother would like for him to stay close to home (what mother doesn't?) but she also said it was Jadeveon's decision.

Coaches from over 90+ Division I schools have visited the South Pointe campus to see this special football player. Hopefully, Coach Nick Saban and staff can recruit this top recruit to the Capstone. He could be a defensive end in the mold of the dynamic Copeland & Curry duo in 1992, and be an excellent player to plug into the Marcell Dareus hole after this year. He isn't as big in terms of weight, so he might play the jack linebacker position. If he comes to Alabama, he will fit into the Saban defense nicely and could play early.

Watch the video below, it should give you a nice look at Mr. Clowney and the potential of his football talent. Hope to snag his signature next February.

Harris came to Alabama with as a highly sought-after bluechip prospect out of Gadsden High School, just up interstate 59 in the northeast corner of the state. Impressive as a high school standout, he caught the attention of college scouts around the county. He was regarded as one of the top linebacker prospects in the country. In fact, he was a Parade All-American, named the No. 22 player nationally on SuperPrep Magazine's Elite 50, rated SuperPrep's No. 3 linebacker in the country, and commonly listed that year as the No. 2 player in the state of Alabama.

The high school accolades go on, but Harris has not emerged as starter until this year. He is now a man on a mission. He has something to prove to everyone who thinks he was a bust. Last year as a sophmore, he was suspended for the first six games of the year in an incident prior to the Virginia Tech for rules violations involving a laptop. He made restitutions and was back playing 6 games later. It put him a little behind on the year and he finished with 6 tackles and two solo stops.

The stats did not look fantastic, but he contributed to the team effort that led to the national championship. However, he set his mind to improving his body for the phyical rigors of SEC football by bulking up to 231 pounds from his incoming weight of 212 lbs in 2008. The results were remarkable, and we will definitely be able to see this young stud at the weakside linebacker defend the Penn State Nittany Lions with more speed and strength than ever.

Look for Jerrell Harris to go out tonight on a mission to prove he belongs in the SEC and in the same breath as the legendary linebackers of the one "true" Linebacker U.... Alabama.

In Saturday's cupcake win against San Jose State, Alabama got the chance to see some youngsters play for the first time. Most impressive of them all was CJ Mosley. He not only played good for a freshman, but he was the top tackler on the team with six tackles. It was a very impressive debut to say the least.

He could be a great add-on to the defense to compliment Hightower. To me, it seems very reminiscent of the combination of a Dont'a Hightower as a freshman and Rolando McClain from two years ago. It will definitely be interesting to see how CJ Mosley develops for the rest of the year... but you cannot but be excited with how he played Saturday.

I predict C.J. Mosley will be the next stud linebacker at Alabama. For a Bama defense that is reloading after losing a lot of talent to the NFL, it's good to see fresh faces making a big impact. Something tells me that CJ Mosley will be a integral part of the defense this year as Alabama carries out the task of defending its national championship. We need all the help we can get when we play the likes of Penn State, Florida, and the rest of the tough schedule that features 6 teams that get a bye week before playing Alabama.

Mosley was a four-star linebacker prospect from Theodore High School in Theodore, AL who just signed with Alabama on February 2010. This explosive young linebacker was Parade All-American and a U.S. Army All-American in high school. In fact, Rivals had him ranked as the No. 6 outside linebacker nationally.

At 6-2 / 225 lbs, he still has some growing to do for SEC football, but I have a feeling that the Alabama 's nutritionist and strength trainer will have meat on his bones more by next year. For him to step up at this caliber of play in his first game as a true freshman is simply amazing.

Jerrell Harris - Starting Alabama Crimson Tide Linebacker

Mosley was listed as second team behind Jerrell Harris at the weakside linebacker position in the preseason. While he will most likely not overtake Harris for the starting nod, he will see significant playing time during games this year.

Coach Saban made a comment about him in the preseason saying, "CJ is a very bright guy. He's very football instinctive and he's a very, very good athlete."

To hear coach Nick Saban using two very's in describing how good this young athlete is, that it should show you how highly he thinks of him. CJ Mosley is going to be a star.

Saban went on to comment more on CJ Mosley saying, "As young guys go, he's been one of the guys who has been showing the most maturity in being able to learn, grow, develop, and learn from mistakes. ... He's not affected by the mistakes, because he doesn't get frustrated. ... Not to the point that affects his play. Not to the point where the negative experience is not a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block."

Dont'a Hightower is also high on the young freshman. Hightower said, "I see more of Rolando (McClain) in him than I see myself. ... He's a lot smarter than what I was when I was a freshman. .. He didn't come in early like a couple of the other freshmen did, but he's progressed a lot faster than a lot of those guys have, even some of the guys that have already been here for a year."

Will CJ Mosley be the next stud linebacker in the Alabama linebacker factory much like Rolando McClain, Cornelius Bennett, Derrick Thomas, Dont'a Hightower, DeMeco Ryans, Lee Roy Jordan, Woodrow Lowe, Barry Krauss... Time will tell, but I truly believe true freshman C.J. Mosley IS the next stud linebacker at the University of Alabama!
