Brock Huard and David Pollack interview Alabama running back Trent Richardson via Skype on the Palmer & Pollack Show. You can obviously see the focus from Trent on the task at hand. He doesn't let the Heisman hype go to his head.

Another thing I am glad to hear is that Trent said that so far this season, he feels completely healthy, almost like he is playing in the first game every game. He feels that good. If we can get him through the rest of the season like this, Bama will be in good shape on offense.

Another funny story was about how Coach Saban has the remote control door in his office.

Although Alabama running back Trent Richardson scored three touchdowns in last Saturday’s victory over Kent State, he only rushed for 37 yards which has some questioning whether or not Richardson will have to have a HUGE game against Penn State in order to stay in the Heisman race.

Stiff Arm Trophy has Richardson’s stock dropping after last week’s performance against Kent State although he is still fifth in the country according to their poll.

Stiff Arm has a pretty good record over the years of picking Heisman winners including Mark Ingram which they predicted Ingram would win, but it would be a close vote. The positive thing for Trent is that he’ll have plenty of chances to show what he can do even if the Penn State defense stops him
But you do have to wonder if Richardson doesn’t run over the Nittany Lions today if his stock will fall so far that even if he does get back into the Heisman race, that there is so much anti-SEC sentiment out there that it may not matter.

I don't know about you but I'm ready to watch some Alabama football tomorrow! I've been waiting on pins and needles since the end of the Michigan State game! Woo-hoo it's finally here!
The Race for Starting Quarterback

I really look forward to seeing how the two "starting" quarterbacks, Philip Sims and AJ McCarron, react to game time situations for Alabama. Depending on how they perform in a real live game, the top performer could walk away with a starting position as the season wears on.

Coach Saban said on Alabama's statewide radio show "Hey Coach" Thursday night, "I hate to say it publicly, but it is a bit of an audition." So therefore the gauntlet has been laid down by the boss in T-town. However he did go on to say that if there is no separation in the quality of play that he has no problem in playing both players throughout the season.

My guess is that the job isn't one that will be won, however it will be one that would be "lost"by the player that is making the most mistakes. I'm hoping that both play so well that Alabama can rotate them both in games throughout the year. If that is the case, then they are both performing at a high level and not making mistakes (which is good!)

How Will the Defensive Line Perform?

The defensive line did not perform last year as it had in the previous year with Mount Cody at the helm, however Alabama brought in a new defensive line coach Chris Rumph from Clemson. There is a new attitude in the defensive line that should translate on game day. Rumph has been training the defensive line on how to be disciplined in the running game also being more aggressive in the pass rush. When things that he's doing this to show them how to use their hands more effectively to shed the blocker.

Look for better performance by the defensive line, however keep in mind that Kent State is a much smaller opponent. Look for Bama to push them around pretty easily. Penn State will be the first glance at real competition blocking our defensive line. How well they pressure the quarterback will make the secondary's job much easier in coverage. Also look for more linebackers participating on the pass rush for Alabama, especially Courtney Upshaw and Dont'a Hightower.

Newcomers to Keep an Eye on?

One of the newcomers that will be equally interesting to see and live action will be the big man himself, freshman five-star recruit Cyrus Kouandjio. The 6-foot-6, 322-pound offensive tackle prodigy is already listed as backup left tackle as a true freshman. Do you know how hard that is in the SEC conference? He's a big guy but talking to the other players, it's not just size that makes him such an effective player. It's his work ethic. He really wants to learn the system at Alabama and become a great player.

He's a really special player," said senior center William Vlachos. "Sometimes he looks like Orlando Pace out there at left tackle. Other times he looks like a freshman, as he should. I continue to bring him along...."

Speaking about Cyrus Kouandjio, starting TE Michael Williams said he was a "Bell cow." Williams went on to say about the freshman offensive tackle, "You don't see too many freshmen come in like that. Great feet. Great agility. You don't see too many 6-7, 320-pound men being able to move the way he does. He basically looks like me as a tackle, but he weighs 300. There's a lot of power built up in there somewhere."

At wide receiver, it will be interesting to see how redshirt freshman DeAndrew White does as a starting wide receiver. Coach Saban has been especially effluent with praise toward the young wide receiver in the preseason press conferences. Also keep an eye out to see if #8 Duron Carter has a chance to see playing time after joining the team late into fall practice. From seeing him practice, he is showing a lot of potential for helping replace Julio Jones as a big wide receiver this year.

Who Will Be the Most Exciting Player This Year?

I really think it will be a close race between Courtney Upshaw and Trent Richardson, however I think that Trent Richardson will have a breakout year in which he will win the Heisman Trophy. On offense, TR will be everywhere from the wildcat possibly even splitting out as a wide receiver, however he will primarily be used always to punish defenses with his slashing speed and upper body strength.

Conclusions to Be Drawn from Tomorrow's Game?

I don't believe the quarterback race will be determined by tomorrow's game because both players will play so well. The defensive line will most likely not be blocked very well, but we should see how well the defensive pass rush improves. The new wide receivers will be interesting to see and TR will be TR.

Its obviously a first game against a cupcake team, but keep an eye on these things to determine how well Alabama's team is gelling for a national title run.

Auburn will not come into Bryant Denny Stadium and take this game away from Alabama. It’s our house. A stadium packed with 101K screaming Bama fans will make it unbearable for Cam Newton as the Crimson Tide defense reins in the Heisman candidate.

The Auburn defense is vulnerable where Alabama is strong... in the passing game. Auburn is only ranked No. 100 in pass defense in the country, giving up a whopping 244 yards per game.

With the smarts of Greg McElroy & the blazing speed of Julio Jones, it will be hard for the Auburn defense to defend. Alabama will throw early and often on an Auburn defense that is particularly susceptible to the pass.

Alabama's defense is particularly stout on the passing game, #7 in the country. Not only that, Alabama will be keying on Cam Newton. You won't see him getting into the secondary running free like in other games this year. Coach Saban will have CJ Moseley keying on Cam's every move. The defensive ends and outside backers will be responsible for preventing the option game from churning up yard.

I look for nothing but a great game... from Alabama that is. Auburn is certainly no pushover. However, I think Alabama is going to surprise the college football world by knocking Auburn off its roost. The Tide will play lights out football much like two years ago, and put a hurt on the Tigers.

War Bloogle said that if Auburn's "luck does run out they'll find another way to win."

He implies that Auburn doesn’t even have to have to luck to beat Bama. I would like to Mr. War Bloogle & all his war chicken buddies know that Alabama football is not dead this year. I predict Alabama's defense will "Cage up the Cam" and roar to a overwhelming victory Friday. 34-7 Crimson Tide wins!

Have you ever heard of NY Yankee's Lou Gehrig? Mr. Pipp (sounds like a soft drink!) was the starting first baseman for the Yankees when he famously lost his starting job to Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig at the beginning of Gehrig's record breaking streak of starting 2,130 consecutive games! Pipp was said to have sat out that game prior to the first Lou Gehrig start due to a "splitting headache". He wasn't a bad player at all either, in fact he was the first Yankee to win a home run title! In fact, he personally helped develop as a young first baseman, Lou Gehrig!

Where are we going with this story? Well, there has been some speculartion from the media that Mark Ingram was going to befall the same fate as ol' Wally Pipp saga of 1925. The theory is that Alabama's Trent Richardson has been so good running the ball this year that MArk Ingram will be the odd man out as T.R. takes over the starting role.

trent-richardson-pippNothing could be further from the truth. You could even ask Trent Richardson himself, who should be starting. Even after capturing the SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors after his tremendous 144 yards rushing against the vaulted Penn State defense, he will defend Mark Ingram's right to be the starting running back at Alabama.

"When we get Mark back, we're going to be even better," star backup running back Trent Richardson said. "We can all have fresh legs."

Richardson would start for 99 percent of the college football teams in America, if not 100% besides Alabama. He is that good. He is out of the same high school and the same mold of Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith. He is immensely talented but he understands his role and the concept of team. He wants MArk Ingram back soon, even if it means less carries down the road. He knows that long term it will mean higher quality carries as Alabama will be able to pound defenses.

Alabama's coach Nick Saban was profuse in the praise this week for his star backup "Trent Richardson played a fantastic game, He's the first one to get 100 yards against their defense in a long time, which says a lot about their defense. But it also says a lot about Trent."

In him taking over the role of Heisman winner, Ingram, Richardson set the record straight by saying "No way" to the concept. He explained further by saying "We don't even look at ourselves as starters," Richardson said. He is not just being nice, he actually means it. He considers himself an equal partner in the running back position, but he also enjoys seeing his buddy carry the load too. "It's just a pleasure to watch him run," Richardson said of Heisman winner Mark Ingram. "I love seeing him run."

So don't try to think that Trent is taking over, Mark will be back stronger than ever after his surgery, and the SEC better watch out.

We are M.I.T.R. (mightier) with them both than with just T.R.!

Alabama coach Nick Saban made a statement Wednesday concerning the playing status of last year's Heisman winning running back Mark Ingram for the Penn State game. It appears that it will be unlikely that he will play against Penn State on Saturday.

Although the left knee has been "improving every day", Coach Saban is indicating that it is most likely that Ingram probably won't be able to play against Penn State.

The medical staff continues to evaluate Ingram "day-to-day", Saban said. "He hasn't had any swelling or problems. If he can continue to progress—I would say he's probably not going to be ready to play this week. He might be ready by the game, but he won't be able to practice enough."

Alabama coach Nick Saban did not sound optimistic Monday when speaking about the return of Heisman winner Mark Ingram, the #1 ranked Crimson Tide running who just came off kenee surgery, for the 6 p.m. game Saturday night versesNo. 19 Penn State.

"We just need to see him be able to be himself, be 100 percent, be able to practice enough to be confident and ready," Saban said. "I'm not anticipating that that's going to happen."

Ingram is set this Monday to begin "dry-land rehab" and so far has not been seen on the practice field since surgery.

"Every rehab and every step of the way when you come back from this has to be evaluated in 12 to 24 hours as to how you react to that," Saban stated. "It's going to be a day-to-day basis as to whether he can take the next step, and the next step and the next step.

"You can ask me, but I don't know if he'll be able to play in this game. ... It would probably be a little bit of a stretch for everything to go perfectly."

When asked about what he needs to see in Mark Ingram in order for him to allow Mark to play Saturday, Coach Saban said..

"I have to see Mark Ingram be Mark Ingram," he said.

Heisman Trophy award winning running back Mark Ingram will miss the University of Alabama’s season-opening game against San Jose State this Saturday after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

After that game, it will evaluated on a week to week basis on whenever he can return. “It was a situation where everyone involved thought it would be better to take care of now, so he would not have any issues with it later in the season,” Saban said.

The good news is apparently this type of injury is not long term. Coach Nick Saban said. “We will make every decision in the future based on what’s best for Mark and his career. This is not an injury that will affect Mark’s future ability to make a full recovery in a relatively short time frame.”

The good news in all this is that Alabama is plenty stocked up in the running back position with players like Trent Richardson & Eddie Lacy. I just hope Mark can come back by the Penn State if he can. He is a hoss and Bama is much better with him in the rotation.
