After watching two weeks of college football one thing is certain: The defense that is being played out there is terrible. How do you explain scores like this over the weekend: 41-35, 45-42, 35-31. Even the Iowa/Iowa State game got into the 40’s.

I looked up NCAA defensive stats this morning and found only two SEC teams in the top 10 in total defense and only one (Alabama) was in the top five. What happened to defense in the SEC?

While certain media types fall all over themselves praising the great games this weekend, no one seems to care that defense in the SEC has fallen all over the league.

Teams like Mississippi State, Auburn, Georgia, and South Carolina, all ranked in the top 25 (except Georgia) and none of them are near the top 25 or even top 30 in total defense; think about that ya’ll.

Here is something else for you to chew on; Vanderbilt and Kentucky are higher ranked in total defense then the teams I just mentioned.

But the teams I mentioned garner a lot of praise because they can outscore anybody. Alabama on the other hand which just dominated a Big Ten team, basically gets no mention at all because they just went out there and did their job.

There was no exciting last minute goal line stand or a tremendous Hail Mary throw to win the game, just total dominance which no one seems to appreciate these days.

Keep this in mind folks, those great offensive teams I mentioned, probably won’t be playing for the national championship in January. Great offense might win you some games, but it’s the defense that wins championships.

Geno Smith becomes Alabama's 17th verbal commitment for 2012

Sounds like the rich get richer, as Bama brings in another high level cornerback for the stifling Alabama defense. Saban has a real knack for spotting talent in the backfield. He looks really good in coverage on the video above, but of course this is the highlight video. They never show the missed assignments, but overall he looks like a quick coverage guy that can really close on the ball when its on the air. He also seems to have excellent open field running ability as he carries the ball after an int. Look forward to inking this peach (Georgia) of a db!

According to reports from the Daily Press of Newport News, Virginia, Alabama and Virginia Tech will be kicking off the 2013 season opener against one another. This will be a rematch of the 2009 season-opener that Alabama won 34-24.

The report states that the game will be the 2013 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game that will open the season in Atlanta's Georgia Dome.

The announcement will come soon according to Virginia Tech AD Jim Weaver, however official word will come from the organizers of the Kickoff game.

Coach Nick Saban seems to love these intriguing early match-ups of a non-cupcake non-conference team early on in the season. It really goes on to prove the metal of his teams to go through an early fire. This year, the best we could do was the second game verses Penn State, but next year Alabama will start the 2012 season out against Michigan in Dallas, TX. (It could be debated on whether Michigan is now a cupcake, however.... thanks to Rich. Rod!)

I am pumped to get the opportunity to open the 2013 season against one of the best in the business in Frank Beamer and I am sure that Coach Saban also relishes the opportunity to play the stiff competition early on in from of the nation's spotlight. It really ends up paying big dividends in terms of recruiting and national exposure. Not only that, a win can vault Bama higher in the rankings early on & a loss can be made up over a long season. It is really a good way to start the season.

In reality, it was a mismatch of epic proportions. The goal was to simulate as close to a bye week as possible prior to the Iron Bowl, and set our preparations on the battle to come... putting down the cocky Tigers.

You know the fans are simply unbearably cocky from Auburn. Auburn will be backhanded by the Crimson Tide. Many Auburn fans, simply act like mini-Tommy Tubbervilles. Cocky as h-ll.. and in the end, they will lose.

Have you ever been around cocky people? It is so funny when they get put in their place. I can't wait until Cam & the Tigers come to town. Alabama will pound Auburn relentlessly and dash the hopes of the Auburn nation to win its first national championship since 1905...er I mean 1950...lol

I simply point to the endless comments where they gloat over my (admittedly) miscalculated article in which Kirk Herbstreit said Auburn was going to win the SEC West. Read the crap they said here... I know I was wrong and I admit it. Alabama suffered a down year with only 2 losses this year (and it will stay that way). Alabama replaced nearly our whole defense... however, Alabama's defense is gelling at the perfect time and the offense is on a roll. Auburn

Alabama, this year, had a slight blip on the radar with two losses. It happens to almost every national championship team. However, I really do not think Auburn has the stuff to beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The 20 game home-winning streak will continue on to 21 games. The state championship will mean more than anything, because in the end WINNING THE IRON BOWL is rubbing the noses of the Auburn fans in it… all that will be the satisfaction!

He is much too busy watching over the ship at Alabama to be concerned about the drama surrounding other teams in the SEC, such as Auburn & Mississippi State. Both schools have been mired in the Cam Newton, play for pay scandal & Auburn's Nick Fairley was reported to the SEC office for unnecessary hits in the Georgia on Aaron Murray. If you listen to Saban, he isn't concerned with it at all.

"We're not concerned about what everybody else is doing," he said on the SEC coaches' teleconference today.

"I'm very comfortable with the SEC code of ethics that we have," Coach Saban said. "I'm not in tune to what's going on right now. I'm worried about our team, but I feel the SEC has done a good job in the past of trying to manage compliance issues to hold us all accountable for compliance issues to hold us all accountable for things that we do and make us all responsible for that, and I think there's a tremendous response from every institution to try to do the same thing."

"When you sit in these meetings we have with athletic directors and coaches, we're all trying to get it right. We're all trying to do the right things so we can ...keep the playing field balanced for everybody."

"But things happen in professions that shouldn't happen. That's why we have an NCAA. That's why we have people investigate circumstances and situations. I'm comfortable with the way they do it. That's up to them with what they find and what they decide to do. I have total faith and confidence that they'll do it the right way."

In fact, Coach Saban has one thing on his mind... Georgia State. Tomorrow night, Alabama takes on Bill Curry's first year club and then Nick Saban's focus switches to Auburn.

One of Julio Jones' recruiting contemporaries from Georgia, who is also an All-SEC wide reciever A.J Green is being held out of the cupcake home opener, Louisiana-Lafayette. The NCAA is investigating his possible participation in the South Beach parties by NFL agents that led to the suspension of Alabama's Marcell Dareus.

In response to the allegations and NCAA investigations, Green said "I've never been to South Beach," when his name surfaced in connection to the allegations.

While this will not directly affect Alabama unless it is a serious violation and we happen to meet Georgia in the SEC Championship, it still is interesting news in SEC football. However, I happen to believe if it is serious, then Georgia has no chance to go to the SEC championship without A.J. Green anyway!

One of the craziest predictions since San Jose State's freshman kicker stated he was ready to knock Alabama around, ESPN's color analyst for College Gameday, Kirk Herbstreit, actually thinks that Auburn will win the SEC West this year! What a joke! Man, I am on the floor rolling. Auburn may win a game or two more, but they have to go through the buzz saw of Alabama at the end of the year. They have no chance.

Auburn's second team units are full of freshmen. Their talent level may be better from the good recruiting year last year; however, they are very young. Coach Saban has Alabama ready for 2010. Alabama is a well oiled machine.

It amazes me that the top sports company on the planet, ESPN, would have a guy like Kirk Herbstreit on the top of the food chain there. He is the face of college football for this mega media giant and he comes out with drivel like saying Auburn is going to win the SEC West? That’s like everyone last year saying Ole Miss was going to win the SEC. It seems to me that it is popular to try and predict an upsurge by a predictable play toy like Ole Miss & Auburn. Sure, Auburn played Alabama a decent game last year, but most of it was based on trickery. The overall best team finished 1st because of superior physicality & mental toughness.

Even a casual fan has to remember the Auburn team of last year that struggled with Ball State and then LSU, Arkansas, Georgia, & Kentucky took the Tigers out to the woodshed. Alabama also knocked the kitties out.

I predict Auburn this year will definitely lose to South Carolina, LSU, Georgia, & Arkansas. In the SEC West, 4 losses won't do it. Especially with Bama riding high. Expect Auburn to keep coughing up hairballs on gameday and for one Gameday announcer to start eating eagle, er... I mean crow. Chow down Kirk! :-)

Of course, this will never happen.. but it is fun to think about. The truth, however, is that Coach Nick Saban is not a happy man. He is mad at NFL agents and the system that allows them contact his star football players

First.. Look at what happened with the Andre Smith fiasco back in Jan 2009 when he had to sit out his last game in the Sugar Bowl due to improper agent contact. You know what happened, and Coach Nick Saban hates to lose because of a key player like Andre Smith being declared ineligible .

Here we are again at the cusp of a new football season, a media day start today with Nick Saban coming to the podium to speak his mind on a new season with expectations for greatness. On the day before, news breaks that possible infractions have occurred with his super star defensive lineman, Marcel Dareus.

Man talk about screwing up the first day of media days!!! The boss man in Tuscaloosa can't be happy!

I'm hoping that the investigation proves that more so Darius did not take any money in transportation, lodging, or any other expense because he is a star player and he can make a difference in a ballgame.

Look what the sleazy agents have done to Reggie Bush and USC and the NCAA is just looking for an excuse to come after Alabama again! Yeah that's right there is no good blood between Alabama and the NCAA!

Hopefully Coach Nick Saban doesn't ever have get into a wrestling match with them! Reggie Bush even has had his Heisman Trophy revoked and games from a national championship year have been vacated! None of that is going to happen in this case, however the NCAA is not anyone you want to tangle with. It is why Nick Saban stays on their good side!

Keep in mind that here in the South, we take our football (and our wrestling) very seriously!  Heck, you know we take it seriously here in the South when Tennessee fans are mugged by their own football players and they don't want to press charges because "that's just the way it is in Tennessee!" And most likely, you'll see that mugged fan cheering on the UT football team! You'll find it throughout the Southeast that football fans here take her football dead serious.

Going back to what Nick Saban is dealing with right now with football agents, he is requesting that the NCAA looks at how agents can interact with college football players. He is asking if it really makes sense to throw open the doors of the colleges to the NFL if they're not going to help them out about punishing the agents for illegal contact of college players.

But what is the college to do? They already educate athletes and their families about the perils of dealing with agents. There is a possibility that they can lose their eligibility through agent contact. The university and the coaches cannot be in the back pocket of every player on their team. It is ultimately the player's responsibility to do the right thing.

Right now, the NCAA is trying to determine who paid for the trip for Marcel Dareus to Miami. That is to be determined. But one thing is for sure, Nick Saban is not happy!

In a statement by Coach Saban on the Dareus incident, "What the NFL Players Association and the NFL need to do is if any agent breaks a rule and causes ineligibility for a player, they should suspend his (agent's) license for a year or two," Coach Saban said. "I'm about ready for college football to say, 'Let's just throw the NFL out. Don't let them evaluate players. Don't let them talk to players. Let them do it at the combine.' If they are not going to help us, why should we help them?"

I have a feeling if a bad agent was to come around Nick Saban in Hoover, he might be willing to lay him out with a piledriver!
