After watching two weeks of college football one thing is certain: The defense that is being played out there is terrible. How do you explain scores like this over the weekend: 41-35, 45-42, 35-31. Even the Iowa/Iowa State game got into the 40’s.

I looked up NCAA defensive stats this morning and found only two SEC teams in the top 10 in total defense and only one (Alabama) was in the top five. What happened to defense in the SEC?

While certain media types fall all over themselves praising the great games this weekend, no one seems to care that defense in the SEC has fallen all over the league.

Teams like Mississippi State, Auburn, Georgia, and South Carolina, all ranked in the top 25 (except Georgia) and none of them are near the top 25 or even top 30 in total defense; think about that ya’ll.

Here is something else for you to chew on; Vanderbilt and Kentucky are higher ranked in total defense then the teams I just mentioned.

But the teams I mentioned garner a lot of praise because they can outscore anybody. Alabama on the other hand which just dominated a Big Ten team, basically gets no mention at all because they just went out there and did their job.

There was no exciting last minute goal line stand or a tremendous Hail Mary throw to win the game, just total dominance which no one seems to appreciate these days.

Keep this in mind folks, those great offensive teams I mentioned, probably won’t be playing for the national championship in January. Great offense might win you some games, but it’s the defense that wins championships.

Constancy and balance - that’s what the Crimson Tide showed today as they defeated Penn State, 27-11. AJ McCarron showed poised and maturity as he settled into the game. McCarron started the game 0-3, but ended up throwing for 163 yards (19-31) and one touchdown.

Running back, Trent Richardson, looked like his old self running for 110 yards and two touchdowns. As far as the Bama defense goes, no surprise there, they shut down Penn State’s offense most of the afternoon.

The Nittany Lions had gotten off to a good start in the first quarter with a 16 play, 54 yard drive that stall-PSU would kick the field goal to take a 3-0, after that it was all Bama.

After giving up the field goal in the first quarter, the Bama defense would tighten up and would force the Nittany Lions into several turnovers in the second half which would lead to scoring opportunities and the offense for the Tide would pick up.

The Tide would fake a punt and go for it on a fourth down play which seemed to get the offense going. From there, McCarron would throw a touchdown pass to tight end Michael Williams to take a 7-3 lead.

After a Penn State punt, Bama would march down the field again and kick a field goal to increase the lead to 10-3. PSU would come back with a drive of their own ,only to fumble on a first down catch. Bama would recover the fumble and with 35 seconds to go in the half, Richardson would take it in the end zone to make the score at the half, Bama 17-3.

Bama would kick another field goal in the third quarter to make it 20-3 and with just under six minutes to go in the ball game, Richardson would scored his second touchdown of the game after two big runs set up by back up Eddie Lacy, to make the score 27-3.

With less then three minutes to go in the game, PSU would score, go for two to make the final score Alabama 27 Penn State, 11.

Coach Saban seemed generally pleased with the play of his team and his quarterback.

“We learned to be aggressive today. We learned to attack,” he said.

“AJ did a really good of managing the game...Penn State is a much better team than they were a year ago.”

Hey everybody! Hope you had a great 4th of July! I know I did. I ate too much and took in the local fireworks here in Crossville. We had a great time & I hope you did too. Just looking at the calendar and seen that we are 60 days away from Alabama's kickoff.

What to Look For In Fall

Next month will be opening of fall camp and there will be lots of competition for playing time for the Crimson Tide players. One spot that is especially intriguing is at quarterback. QB is the leader of the offense and it will be interesting to see whether AJ McCarron or Phil Simms rises to the top.

The defense will be packed with talent as senior Mark Barron leads this impressive group of players. Look for Don'ta Hightower, Dre Kirkpatrick, Robert Lester, & Courtney Upshaw to make big plays all fall. This group is very talented and deep. The big question marks will be on defensive line. Hopefully someone will step up and provide great run-stopping-ability up-front.

Freshmen

As always, it will be interesting to see if any freshmen will step right in and contribute immediately. If they do, they are very good. I have a feeling even though Trey Depriest is behind some stiff competition at LB... he will be one of the freshmen that will see lots of playing time. It is also very possible that Cyrus Kouandjio will be an impact player if he learns the offense. He has a very imposing frame & athletic ability. The key will be his ability to learn the offensive line schemes. Don't forget Dee Hart. He has the speed that can make a difference on offense and punt returns.

This upcoming year will be exciting. I am getting revved up thinking about it being ONLY 60 DAYS away! I hope you are too!

I know who isn't, all the players from teams on the rest of Bama's schedule. Thats who! At 6-4 306 end who creates more havoc on an opposing team's offense than a bull in a china shop.

Marcell Dareus burst onto the national scene with his superb MVP performance in the BCS National Championship Game against Texas. Ask Colt McCoy. Whether he admits it or not (he claims 'knows he had them'), Dareus put the gun slinging QB out to pasture in January's national title game. Not to mention, Dareus had an interception return for a TD after picking off the backup QB Garrett Gilbert.

He hasn't said as much, but you will most likely see this big boy head to the NFL as a first round draft pick following this season. He is that talented. He is a tremendous pass rusher who can also stop the run with force.

In three spring practices this year, this freak of nature pounded the Alabama offense for 21 tackles, 10 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. For a big guy, he was all over the field.

The defense looks great to have replaced all the talent that we have, so Saban has us ready. Missing Marcell Dareus was only a blip on the screen as Alabama is very deep.

As good as it was to see freshman Ed Stinson contribute a team leading 9 tackles against Penn State and CJ Mosely throttling San Jose State for a game leading tackles, we need the cuddly big guy to get in the rotation.

It will definitely make the difference in our defense playing strong for 4 full quarters. We'd would've most likely prevented the Penn State field goal with him in there...

oh well, I am glad he is back! Aren't you?

I bet Florida's QB Brantley, Auburn's QB Newton, South Carolina's RB Lattimore, LSU's QB Jefferson..as well as lot of OL will have wished they hadn't met this big guy by years end!

#1: Defensive Line Domination of The Line of Scrimmage - Alabama's defensive line needs to physically control the line of scrimmage against Penn State's huge offensive line. This will free up Alabama's linebackers to fly to the ball, plug the holes, and run laterally with ease.

Losing impact players from last year's domanant defensive line, such as Terrence Cody, Lorenzo Washington, and Brandon Deaderick, would impact most any other college team negatively. However, even with Marcel Dareus out of the game, players Like Damion Square, Josh Chapman, Kerry Murphy, and the rest of the big bruisers on defensive line will need to step up.

Alabama's defensive line coach, Bo Davis, had words of warning to people who consider this year's defensive linemen at Alabama any less effective than last year's, saying "Those guys, to me, I feel are just as good as the guys" from last year's defensive line.

With our young secondary, it is important to get a pass rush on Penn State's true freshman quarterback. If he gets rattled early, look for Bama to roll big time.

#2 Secondary Locking Down Coverage on PSU Receivers - Alabama has a brand-new secondary, for the most part, beyond Mark Barron. Even though Penn State has a freshman quarterback, Rob Bolden, look for them to attempt to exploit the perceived weakest area of Alabama's team.

Alabama has three brand-new starters in Robert Lester, junior college transfer DeQuan Menzie, and sophomore Dre Kirkpatrick. You will also see true freshman DeMarcus Milliner, come into the game often in nickel situations. Even though Penn State quarterback is a true freshman, there obviously has to be good reasons for his being the first starting true freshman quarterback in 50 years for Penn State.

Don't take it for granted that Rob Bolden is your typical freshman. Coach Nick Saban said of Penn State's starting true freshman QB Rob Bolden,
“You’d never know he was a freshman, that’s for sure. He’s got a very good arm, he’s very accurate, he has a lot of poise,” Saban said of Bolden. “They didn’t have any game management issues, fumbled snaps, delay of games, the guy hard counts like a veteran and draws the other team off sides. He didn’t make really any bad decisions, stood in the pocket, took a couple of licks and completed balls.”

#3. Greg McElroy Plays Smart - Greg is applying to be a Rhodes scholar, so would you expect anything less from the cerebrial QB? However, being without the services of Mark Ingram, it might mean a little more pressure on the 5th year senior to perform at a higher level in front of the home crowd at Bryant-Denny Stadium. He just needs to play his normal ball control game and not make any fool hardy mistakes.

He doesn't need to try too hard. McElroy needs to make smart decisions by distributing the football without taking too many risks. When he does air it out to the likes of Julio Jones and Marquis Maze on post-routes, it needs to be so far down field that it stretches the defense and is only catchable by Alabama's wide outs.

If he can hit the running backs & tight ends early and often, it will help open running lanes for Trent Richardson & Eddie Lacy, in addition to making it easier to throw long.

OVERALL

Of course, there are other keys to winning, as it is a team sport. There are other aspects of Alabama's game that will be vital to victory over Penn State, such as the special teams unit & offensive line play, but if we play well in these top three areas of interest, Bama will win handedly.

No. 1 Alabama cruises past San Jose State 48-3 ! It had it all...from a one handed Julio Jones TD snatch to several TD jaunts by Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy ran for 177 yards and 4 TDS (2 each) combined with Lacy carrying for a team leading 111 yards. McElroy connected on 13-of-15 passes for 218 yards, while McCarron finished 9-of-15 for 116 yards.

Personally.. I did not get to see this game due to a "honey-do job that required 8 hours under the house in the nasty crawl space, but I did catch what could of it on the radio. If you did not see it either, you will certainly need to see the highlight reels below on video…. Especially the Julio Jones one handed circus catch. There were a few snags in the game where mistakes were made, like a Eddie Lacy fumble going into the end zone that resulted in a touchback for San Jose State. Julio Jones had an easy wide open catch that he dropped in the open field, but I believe that the one hander made up for the miss. I would like to see him straighten out that issue however in the rest of the season. Marquis Maze made a long 48 yard TD catch.

The defense played awesome in only allowing 175 yards of total offense for SJSU and Robert Lester snatching a INT. Two native Alabamians on San Jose State's roster were largely responsible for the Spartans' only score of the day as SJSU went down the field 67 yards in eight plays on its first drive. Tuscaloosa native, Junior Brandon Rutley, ran 3 times on the drive, including a 32-yard scamper to the Alabama 47. After 5 more plays, redshirt freshman Harrison Waid, born in Huntsville, placed the Spartans on the scoreboard with a 31-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3. However, that was the last of the scoring from SJSU. The rest of the day Alabama's D only allowed 108 yards.

ALL SEC OFFENSE
From Alabama there is, of course, Heisman award winning running back Mark Ingram on first-team offense. Also there is Julio Jones at wide receiver, Barry Jones on the offensive line.

The second-team offense has QB Greg McElroy, RB Trent Richardson, and OT James Carpenter. I consider Trent Richardson being a second-team all SEC running back when he doesn't even start for Alabama to be simply amazing. This shows how stacked Alabama really is in the backfield.

ALL SEC DEFENSE

On first-team defense, SEC coaches picked rising star Marcell Darius on the defensive line, Mark Barron in the secondary, Dont'a Hightower at linebacker. Dont'a Hightower is returning from a severe knee injury and it will be interesting to see how he factors into the new 2010 Alabama defense. Hopefully his knee will all doubt that he will prove to be one of the top defenders in the SEC.

Florida has the most players overall with 10, but Alabama has more first-team ALL-SEC players with six total.

Trent Richardson's electric performance against Texas in the 2010 national championship game definitely turned some heads in the national media. The young horse of the punishing Alabama backfield is even getting talk as possible Heisman candidate for 2011. So therefore, it is not surprising that he is drawing comparisons to one of the most famous alumni at his former high school, Pensacola Escambia of Pensacola Florida, none other than Emmitt Smith.

Emmitt Smith Emmitt Smith

Just like Richardson, Emmitt Smith career had somewhat of a slow start in his freshman year, but picked up steam as the year went on. It was actually that freshman year that he earned his first collegiate start in the 1987 SEC opener against Alabama in Birmingham. Unfortunately, Smith burned the Crimson Tide for 224 yards and 2 TDs in a win over Alabama. He later went on to bigger and better things and eventually became perennial All-Pro and Hall of Fame member of the NFL.

While there is much to be seen from Richardson before he can be honestly compared to Smith, the tools are there that make him a threat on any part of the field. At any other college in America, TR would be the starting running back and would have gotten a lot more carries. However, he did the smart thing by going to Alabama and saving his body by being a 1-2 punch that keeps his legs fresh way into the 4th quarter.

The running style is very similar, very elusive with strong upper body strength. It was on display with the stiff arms and upper body knockdowns of defenders such as the Arkansas sideline TD run that broke that game wide open. Not only that, he has speed to kill a defense. Texas got a big taste of that hole splitting speed when TR ripped the #1 ranked defense in the nation (according to stats) for a 49 yard run that was pretty much untouched.

He has the work ethic, the grit, the speed, the toughness, and he is even developing his pass catching skills as evidenced in the over-the-shoulder circus catch on the sideline of the 2010 Spring A-day game. While Mark Ingram truly showed why he is the #1 running back on the team, there isn't much of a drop off at all when TR touches the ball.

I am looking forward to seeing Trent as a sophomore phenom make defenses pay once again as Alabama marches toward trying to nail down its 14th national championship.

All I can say is that Trent Richardson is no ordinary running back, and it won't be too long until the comparisons to one of the top running backs in history will be inevitable if he continues to improve.   In fact, Sports illustrated just named TR as one of the breakout players of the year.  Check it out

Sources say that Star Jackson is considering transferring from Alabama to play elsewhere... and that elsewhere could be one of Alabama's opponents next year, Georgia State.  Georgia State is coached by none other than former Alabama head coach Bill Curry.  The connection to Star Jackson is through an assistant coach who was Star Jackson's former high school coach, Errick Lowe of Lake Worth (FL).

The move could be a win-win situation for all parties involved.  First of all, Star Jackson would not lose eligibility in tranferring to Georgia State because it is not a  Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team.  That means that next year, if Star transfers and wins the GSU starting QB spot, he could be facing some familiar foes in the  Alabama defense when GSU takes on the Tide on Nov. 20.  

In all, he would have 3 years left to play football on the collegiate level and possibly still get noticed by the NFL someday.  For Georgia State, Bill Curry will get a top level QB to help in his inaugural year of football.  Alabama also would benefit from opening up a scholarship position for another top recruit to be signed. 

 As of today, Star Jackson has not transferred, but the deadline for it at GSU is June 1st.   Jackson's departure would leave the Crimson Tide with 3 scholarship quarterbacks  in Greg McElroy,  A. J. McCarron, and the 5 star true freshman Phillip Sims.
