It’s hard to believe, but after this weekend, a fourth of the college football regular season will be over. As fans see the weaknesses of their teams, and the players who will be leaving after this season, it’s already time to figure out which high school stars can replace seniors and fill in the talent gaps for our favorite teams.

So who are the top recruits in the State of Alabama?

It depends on whom you ask.

#10 (A Tie)

Beniquez Brown

Beniquez Brown (Florence High School), a 6-foot-3, 220 pound athlete who has been dominant on both sides of the ball. He has the size to play linebacker or tight end, but his speed allows him to excel at both tail back and safety.

Alphonse Taylor (Davidson High School, Mobile), an offensive tackle with a world of potential, Alphonse stands at an imposing 6-foot-6, 330 pounds. Expected to play right tackle in college, Alphonse has committed to Florida State.

Because of the tie, 11 players made the list. This should give you a good start in understanding who the most highly sought players are, and who just might be the stars of the future.

So...what does all of this mean in the long term? The rankings today are merely a snapshot of where the prospects stand at this time. Some players will get injured, and others may encounter academic issues that prevent them from playing. The top ranked recruit, quarterback Jameis Winston of Hueytown, might play professional baseball. Other players, not as highly ranked, might grow taller, stronger, or faster and excel at the college level.

Prior to the Tennessee game, Coach Saban summoned the phenom this last season to his office to ask him about his hand. Saban recalled that, "His response to me was, 'I don't want to be held out of anything. I want to practice and do everything. I need to practice and do everything if I'm going to do well in the game,'" Saban stated.

Now the NFL is seeing the same toughness up close. He beat everyone on the field with a fractured foot!

He flat out beat A.J Green in 40. Beat everyone in the broad jump... all on a broke foot.

One of the top analysts of the draft, Charley Casserly of the NFL Network, remarked that “This guy really helped himself with that workout on Sunday," when referring to Julio.

Many experts don't expect Jones to go past the 14th pick (Rams) without being picked. He has definitely improved his stock in the draft.

Many are looking at the Jones workout in the same light as the Michael Crabtree workout of 2009 that wowed the scouts. Much like Julio, he also had a with a stress fracture in his left foot. He ended up picked 10th in that draft.

Today is the day that the NFL scouts descend on Tuscaloosa to check out all the top football players leaving the Crimson Tide this year. With the wealth of talent that Alabama has coming out this year, expect a lot of NFL scouts to be taking plenty of notes.

If you thought that the Indianapolis NFL combine was the only workout that mattered, you would be wrong. In fact, this is very common for the NFL scouts to travel out to campuses for workouts to evaluate players in their own environment. Players love it because they get a second chance to prove themselves on their own turf.

Players will undergo a series of physical tests to determine if they show improvement over the existing workout results from the Indianapolis combine (if they where there). The only outgoing player who will miss Pro Day is star senior cornerback Javier Arenas. Arenas has been troubled by a hamstring injury that he suffered in the Indianapolis workouts. He is scheduled to do a private workout with NFL scouts prior to the draft. McClain decided not to be tested at the first NFL combine. Instead, he opted to be tested at Pro Day because of a reported hamstring that needed to heal.

Many NFL teams are high on the "Man child" McClain, who is huge and fast.  He is expected to have 4.5 speed in the 40 but one coach said it did not matter to him.  The 49ers coach Mike Singletary, who knows a little something about defense as an All-Pro linebacker of the Chicago Bears, says he would be "shocked" if Ro' McClain doen't have a "very good NFL career." 

All American OL MIke Johnson is expected to be a third-round draft and a solid offensive lineman for any team that picks him up.

Junior cornerback, Kareem Jackson, threw his hat into this year's NFL draft and was very impressive in the Indianapolis combine. He is expected to be a second round draft pick, yet may go late 1st round. He ran an impressive 4.48 40 yard dash and the buzz among scouts was that his interviews went very well. David Jeremiah, a former Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns scout said that "Kareem Jackson helped himself immensely," in the Indianapolis scouting combine.

Two players in fact ended up missing the Washington DC check this week because they were training for Pro Day. Those players include Terrence Cody and Rolando McClain.

Terrence Cody's weight will be a "big" thing today as the NFL scouts will see if the big guy was able to work off some of the extra luggage. He came into the Senior bowl game at 370 pounds. It is commonly thought that if Cody can weigh below 350 (and he was already down to 354 at the INdianapolis NFL combine) he could be on track for for the big money with a top 15 draft pick. The teams that will be interested in any are the ones that run the 3-4 formation on defense. Approximately half the NFL temas utilize this scheme.

There some other players that did not get an invite to the Indianapolis combine that will get the opportunity to prove their abilities today at Pro Day in Tuscaloosa. Those players include players like Marquise Johnson, Roy Upchurch, & Eryk Anders.

Most NFL draft experts are considering Rolando McClain the top draft pick from the Alabama team this year. He is projected to be anywhere between the fifth (Chiefs) and the 15th draft pick (Giants).

The NFL draft is set to be on April 22-24.

Colt Mccoy Injury - National Championship Game Verses Alabama

This is a little outside the news of the Tide, but since it was a Tide player that "put the Colt down" then I figured it was news worthy.

Colt McCoy visited the world famous sports doctor James Andrews of Birmingham, AL following the national championship in search of treatment for the pinched nerve that that knocked him out of the national championship game verses Alabama. McCoy has been seeing the doctors every week since then in obtaining treatment to be able to participate in NFL draft combine drills.

It is said that McCoy is back to throwing the ball 30-40 times a day and plans to fully participate in at least one NFL draft combine (possibly Indianapolis). He was quoted today as saying that the injury is "really coming along" and should be close to 100 percent.

Colt was quoted as saying...

 "The injury and I think the way that my college career ended has kind of sparked a fire inside of me as far as I'm going to show that I'm going to be ready to go. I'm going to show them that I'm the best, I'm going to show that I'm confident," he said. "I can't wait to step out on the field again, forget the taste that's in my mouth from the last time I played the game. That's what's driving me everyday."

The player of this year's Super Bowl, QB Drew Brees, demonstrated convincingly  that an undersized QB can play exceptionally in the NFL.. HOWEVER I personally believe that Colt McCoy will not make it far in the NFL if he is as fragile as he showed in the Alabama game. Alabama's Marcel Dareus is a big boy, no doubt, but don't expect McCoy to be the next Bret Favre and play every game until he is 40. IF he makes it to 30 in the NFL, I would be highly surprised.

Colt may prove me wrong. I don't wish him harm, I am just saying don't hold your breath if you expect his career to be a long one... But hey, I picked the Chargers to run the table to the Super Bowl... so what do I know?

Anyway, McCoy picked up one of the last of the collegiate accolades sent his way for a storied football career at Texas. Monday night he received the Davey O'Brien Award Monday, which is annually awarded to the nation's top quarterback.
