Former head football coach at the United States Air Force Academy from 1984 to 2006, Fisher DeBerry racked up the most wins and highest winning percentage (.608) in Air Force football history. His best year was 1985, when Air Force finished #8 in the AP with a 12-1 record. He duplicated that record in 1998, but only finished #13.

Today, in retirement, Coach DeBerry a respected coach & authority on football, he is offering his opinion on who should play in college football's biggest game.

Coach DeBerry is adamant about the fact that it "should be who we feel are the two best TEAMS" (emphasis his), regardless of conference play. He said he looks at who "week in and week out" are the best teams.

"It is clear in my mind that LSU right now should be the #1 team because they beat Alabama", Fisher then said, "yet Alabama is that (motioning with his finger close together) close to being number one. It would be an exciting national championship game."

We agree with you on this one coach!

Last Friday, Anthony Grant & Wendell Hudson talked Alabama basketball. Both teams have reason for optimism this season. The men's team returns one of the top players in the country, 2nd team All American JaMychal Green. Green spoke at Media days and spoke about his intentions to step up and set the example for the new blood on Alabama's team. Alabama comes in the season ranked 17th in the nation.

JaMychal Green has looked impressive in the off-season in playing for USA Basketball in the World University Games. This summer, Green came in second on the team in scoring with 12.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as the squad played to a 7-1 record. He lost 17 pounds in the off-season, so look for him to be able to run the floor better and have more endurance.

The ladies team is expected by many to be the best that Wendell Hudson has had since he first became the ladies head coach in 2007. Led by senior leader Ericka Russell, the Tide ladies look to improve mightily this year. Hudson said one of the keys to successful recruiting as of late came from the impact of Nick Saban on the program. Coach Saban has went over and beyond his call of duty to meet the recruits and spend time with them. Hudson indicated that Alabama has signed three junior college All-Americans for instant impact, and two of them were on a 32-1 championship team last year, and another player was on a national championship team in junior college. So there is proven winners in place this year to take Alabama's ladies basketball to a new level of play.

Looking forward to seeing both teams take it to the hoops.

I am loving it! The first profile is about a Alabama legend that I had very little knowledge of, however many of the older generation knew him very well (even if they did not follow Alabama football!) He was a great football player who saved Alabama in the 4th quarter from allowing the potential game-winning TD Washington, however he was also very famous as leading movie star who was the hero of an entire generation. He is well known for playing "Billy The Kid" in the movies and was a famous gun slinger.

If you don't know much about Alabama history, and even if you do, you will absolutely love this book about Alabama football history. It is definitely a great read.

"Johnny Mack Brown is best remembered as perhaps the first athlete who successfully pursued a motion picture career. As a football player at the University of Alabama, Brown played in one of the most important games in southern football history. Until Alabama defeated Washington 20-19 in the 1926 Rose Bowl, southern football did not enjoy the prestige it holds today. The 1926 Rose Bowl provided the first opportunity for southern football to gain national recognition. Trailing 12-0 at halftime, Alabama changed its offensive strategy to utilize Brown's pass catching abilities. In the third quarter, Brown was on the receiving end of 61-yard and 38-yard touchdown pass plays. Alabama won the game. Alabama posted a 10-0 record while shutting out eight opponents. Brown's play in the Rose Bowl inspired the game's head linesman to say, "Johnny Mack Brown has the sweetest feet I have ever seen. The way he managed to elude Washington tacklers in his long runs was marvelous. He has a weaving elusive style that is beautiful to watch." After graduation Brown became one of Hollywood's most popular western stars."

"In January 1926, after Alabama's first Rose Bowl and National Championship, thousands of Tuscaloosa citizens and University students marched from the train station to the Quad on the University campus. Alabama looked sluggish in the first half as they walked into the locker room in a 6-6 tie. To say that Alabama fans weren't nervous would be a lie. The atmosphere was eerily similar to the one in 2009 when Mount Cody had to pull out a miracle field goal block to win the Tennessee game in the waning moments.

But then, Alabama found its game in the 3rd quarter. The sleeping giant was now awakened and Tennessee was simply punished.

All "krunked up" (as Dre Kirkpatrick might say), Alabama was hitting on all cylinders on offense & defense in the second half as they steamrolled to a 37-6 victory.

Alabama came out on defense as its first defensive stop, and marched down for a TD drive with their first four passes connecting for 73 yards. Then AJ McCarron scrambled for a 2 yard TD run in an effort that showed true grit and determination from a young quarterback. It was very much like the one-footed sideline hop by Greg McElroy in the SEC Championship game of 2009. The same grit & spunk was on display in the remarkable turnaround in the second half.

The defense did not allow one first down in the second half, with one play being huge. It was the 4th down quarterback sneak that Alabama stuffed. Simms came within inches of 1st down and on review, he did not get it. One play later, Alabama threw a touchdown pass to Kenny Bell for 39-yard touchdown strike.

The rout was on.

Alabama took a game that for a half looked amazingly close, to taking their level of play to another level and playing like champions.

When the smoke cleared, Alabama had another cigar smoking victory over the Volunteers to revel in. (Not sure if the players did or not, it is officially not allowed by the NCAA. It is my guess that they might have blew a few cigar rings in private :-)

Next comes LSU on November 5th, Alabama won't have the luxury of playing like the 1st half of the Tennessee game if they plan to win what is considered the de facto national championship game. Alabama will need to play the way they did in the 2nd half or Les Miles be grinning all the way to Louisiana.

I like the thought of him spitting out Tuscaloosa grass, throwing his cap, and hearing the ringing of Rammer Jammer in his his ears all the way to Louisiana instead. :-)

There is a bye week for us and LSU. Get ready for Ali vs Frazier. It will be the game of the year.

After watching two weeks of college football one thing is certain: The defense that is being played out there is terrible. How do you explain scores like this over the weekend: 41-35, 45-42, 35-31. Even the Iowa/Iowa State game got into the 40’s.

I looked up NCAA defensive stats this morning and found only two SEC teams in the top 10 in total defense and only one (Alabama) was in the top five. What happened to defense in the SEC?

While certain media types fall all over themselves praising the great games this weekend, no one seems to care that defense in the SEC has fallen all over the league.

Teams like Mississippi State, Auburn, Georgia, and South Carolina, all ranked in the top 25 (except Georgia) and none of them are near the top 25 or even top 30 in total defense; think about that ya’ll.

Here is something else for you to chew on; Vanderbilt and Kentucky are higher ranked in total defense then the teams I just mentioned.

But the teams I mentioned garner a lot of praise because they can outscore anybody. Alabama on the other hand which just dominated a Big Ten team, basically gets no mention at all because they just went out there and did their job.

There was no exciting last minute goal line stand or a tremendous Hail Mary throw to win the game, just total dominance which no one seems to appreciate these days.

Keep this in mind folks, those great offensive teams I mentioned, probably won’t be playing for the national championship in January. Great offense might win you some games, but it’s the defense that wins championships.

There have been many memorable moments in the Alabama/Penn State rivalry over the years. There was the 1979 goal line stand made famous in the Sugar Bowl that won Alabama the national championship that no one will ever forget, but the two probably still most talked about plays in this rivalry took place in 1983 and 1989-one resulting in a loss for the Crimson Tide, the other kept an undefeated season going.

If you are an Alabama fan over the age of 35, you all know the name Preston Gothard. Gothard was going to be the hero in the 1983 game after the Tide came back from a 34-7 deficit. As you all may recall, the touchdown pass quarterback Walter Lewis threw to Gothard in the back of the end zone was called no good and Alabama’s comeback that afternoon was over and the Tide lost 34-28; as replays would show over the years that was a terrible call made by the officials.

Gothard said in a recent article that he hopes that it doesn’t come down to that this weekend.

"Let's hope it doesn't come down to that," Gothard said. "I'm going to be there, first trip back. I'll have to leave the stadium if it comes down to the last play."

What some forgot and I didn’t realize, was that Penn State had been called offsides and the Tide had one more shot at the endzone and STILL couldn’t get in, but we will all remember Gothard’s play as the one that should have won Bama the ball game.

Younger Bama fans probably remember the 1989 thriller between the Tide and the Nittany Lions when Tide linebacker Thomas Rayam blocked the go-ahead field goal that more then likely would have won Penn State the game.

Rayam’s block preserved Alabama’s 17-16 victory. I remember listening to that game and hearing the excitement in Jerry Ducan’s voice when he said “He blocked it Eli!”

Rayam said in the same article that he is still reminded to this day by Tide fans about that play.

"Every time I talk about it, I still get chills," Rayam said.

And nobody who watched Alabama football in the late 70s could ever forget the "Goalline Stand" for the national championshio to win the 1979 National Championship.

It was fourth and goal from the one-foot line with a national championship on the line. Penn State chose to power it in, but Alabama would have none of it. Again, Alabama surged backward through the Penn State line, and Guman was hit in the hole by Barry Krauss and Murray Legg, where he was stopped dead in his tracks.

The Alabama defense had held after a thunderous collision just short of the goal line. Krauss, the man who delivered the brunt of the hit, was knocked unconscious and temporarily lost feeling in his extremities, but he would get up and run off the field under his own power.

The play went down as one of the greatest ever in college football history. Bear Bryant walked off the field with his last national championship.

The score was 49-7, however it wasn't even that close.

In fact, it was one of the most dominating bowl game performances in bowl history. In the history of bowl games, there have been only 8 bowl games that were decided by more than 42 points. To say that Alabama put a whipping on Michigan State is to put it lightly.

The thing was that Alabama really didn't mean to run the score up, it's just that the backups were still churning up huge blocks of yardage.

Michigan State’s porous defense allowed Alabama to run and pass up and down the field all day long. Alabama's first punt wasn't until midway through the third quarter.

This game punctuated the end to a frustrating season, but also laid the groundwork for the upcoming season. A season or Alabama could be in the title hunt once again.

Greg McElroy a very efficient game at quarterback. As a senior, he goes out out Bama's winningest quarterback ever and on top of his game. He completed 13 of 17 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions.

Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson also looked good running the ball. Heck… even the third and fourth string running backs looked like All-Americans taking on the swiss cheese defense of Michigan State.

The defense played one of the best games of the year. The most telling stat of the game was this... the Spartans only had a -48 rushing yards!  That's right. Yes that is a minus in front of the 48!

Courtney Upshaw played an All-American type of game at linebacker with several crushing hits on the quarterback, finishing with 2 sacks out of the team’s 5.  However, I seen him crush the QB numerous time.   I'm really looking forward to seeing him come back for his senior year at Alabama, because I think he can be a real dominant player next year on defense if he stays healthy.

All in all… I am pleased with the Alabama year considering all the injuries and youth on the team. Six more points this year and Alabama could've been playing in the national championship. It didn't happen, but you have got to see the future as being very bright for this Alabama squad next year. I hope we keep a lot of our juniors, but Alabama looked deep. 

I am looking forward to recruiting in February in the A-Day game later this spring.

Alabama fans are more in-favor of Auburn losing than rooting for a fellow SEC team. Hatred runs deep in the heart of dixie when it comes to the Iron Bowl, and the vitriol continues to flow even after 2 weeks after the greatest rivalry game in football.

In an unscientific poll taken today, we asked the question, "Do you want Auburn to beat Oregon for the national championship?"

Alabama fans had three choices:

  • HECK NO! I HATE AUBURN
  • YES! I want Auburn to Represent the State of Alabama & SEC Well!
  • I don't care one way or the other what the the Aubarn does..

The answer may or may not surprise many. Here are the results out of the first 100 votes:

  • 51% - HECK NO! I HATE AUBURN
  • 39% - YES! I want Auburn to Represent the State of Alabama & SEC Well!

However, this writer & many others are relishing the opportunity to play Alabama, the defending national champions.

Many people in the college football world still consider Alabama's talent level as good as anyone in the country. So it is no surprise when Michigan State president comes out to say that playing Alabama might be better than playing in any BCS game besides the national title game.

Michigan State, at 11-1 this year, had a dream season and won the Big 10 championship and yet... still will not get to play in the Rose Bowl. They are in the same Capital One Bowl as they played in 2 years ago with a 9-3 record.

To get a feel for the hard feelings of Michigan State fans who feel their team was left out of the Rose Bowl due to politics, read this column.
