Go to ALCrimsonTide.com to see the Alabama running backs looking sharp in practice yesterday August 25, 2011. Doing agility & sideline bump drills, the backs are really showing their stuff. I really don't think we have to worry about depth in the running back position after seeing the talent that is left there. Of course, Trent Richardson was smooth in everything he did, but Lacey also showed how big a 'hoss he really is. I can't see anyone being able to stop our backfield from churning out bigtime yardage like we did in 2009. Alabama's backs are tough and fast. Can't wait to see them 8 days from now.

According to reports from the Daily Press of Newport News, Virginia, Alabama and Virginia Tech will be kicking off the 2013 season opener against one another. This will be a rematch of the 2009 season-opener that Alabama won 34-24.

The report states that the game will be the 2013 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game that will open the season in Atlanta's Georgia Dome.

The announcement will come soon according to Virginia Tech AD Jim Weaver, however official word will come from the organizers of the Kickoff game.

Coach Nick Saban seems to love these intriguing early match-ups of a non-cupcake non-conference team early on in the season. It really goes on to prove the metal of his teams to go through an early fire. This year, the best we could do was the second game verses Penn State, but next year Alabama will start the 2012 season out against Michigan in Dallas, TX. (It could be debated on whether Michigan is now a cupcake, however.... thanks to Rich. Rod!)

I am pumped to get the opportunity to open the 2013 season against one of the best in the business in Frank Beamer and I am sure that Coach Saban also relishes the opportunity to play the stiff competition early on in from of the nation's spotlight. It really ends up paying big dividends in terms of recruiting and national exposure. Not only that, a win can vault Bama higher in the rankings early on & a loss can be made up over a long season. It is really a good way to start the season.

I know who isn't, all the players from teams on the rest of Bama's schedule. Thats who! At 6-4 306 end who creates more havoc on an opposing team's offense than a bull in a china shop.

Marcell Dareus burst onto the national scene with his superb MVP performance in the BCS National Championship Game against Texas. Ask Colt McCoy. Whether he admits it or not (he claims 'knows he had them'), Dareus put the gun slinging QB out to pasture in January's national title game. Not to mention, Dareus had an interception return for a TD after picking off the backup QB Garrett Gilbert.

He hasn't said as much, but you will most likely see this big boy head to the NFL as a first round draft pick following this season. He is that talented. He is a tremendous pass rusher who can also stop the run with force.

In three spring practices this year, this freak of nature pounded the Alabama offense for 21 tackles, 10 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. For a big guy, he was all over the field.

The defense looks great to have replaced all the talent that we have, so Saban has us ready. Missing Marcell Dareus was only a blip on the screen as Alabama is very deep.

As good as it was to see freshman Ed Stinson contribute a team leading 9 tackles against Penn State and CJ Mosely throttling San Jose State for a game leading tackles, we need the cuddly big guy to get in the rotation.

It will definitely make the difference in our defense playing strong for 4 full quarters. We'd would've most likely prevented the Penn State field goal with him in there...

oh well, I am glad he is back! Aren't you?

I bet Florida's QB Brantley, Auburn's QB Newton, South Carolina's RB Lattimore, LSU's QB Jefferson..as well as lot of OL will have wished they hadn't met this big guy by years end!

Of course, this will never happen.. but it is fun to think about. The truth, however, is that Coach Nick Saban is not a happy man. He is mad at NFL agents and the system that allows them contact his star football players

First.. Look at what happened with the Andre Smith fiasco back in Jan 2009 when he had to sit out his last game in the Sugar Bowl due to improper agent contact. You know what happened, and Coach Nick Saban hates to lose because of a key player like Andre Smith being declared ineligible .

Here we are again at the cusp of a new football season, a media day start today with Nick Saban coming to the podium to speak his mind on a new season with expectations for greatness. On the day before, news breaks that possible infractions have occurred with his super star defensive lineman, Marcel Dareus.

Man talk about screwing up the first day of media days!!! The boss man in Tuscaloosa can't be happy!

I'm hoping that the investigation proves that more so Darius did not take any money in transportation, lodging, or any other expense because he is a star player and he can make a difference in a ballgame.

Look what the sleazy agents have done to Reggie Bush and USC and the NCAA is just looking for an excuse to come after Alabama again! Yeah that's right there is no good blood between Alabama and the NCAA!

Hopefully Coach Nick Saban doesn't ever have get into a wrestling match with them! Reggie Bush even has had his Heisman Trophy revoked and games from a national championship year have been vacated! None of that is going to happen in this case, however the NCAA is not anyone you want to tangle with. It is why Nick Saban stays on their good side!

Keep in mind that here in the South, we take our football (and our wrestling) very seriously!  Heck, you know we take it seriously here in the South when Tennessee fans are mugged by their own football players and they don't want to press charges because "that's just the way it is in Tennessee!" And most likely, you'll see that mugged fan cheering on the UT football team! You'll find it throughout the Southeast that football fans here take her football dead serious.

Going back to what Nick Saban is dealing with right now with football agents, he is requesting that the NCAA looks at how agents can interact with college football players. He is asking if it really makes sense to throw open the doors of the colleges to the NFL if they're not going to help them out about punishing the agents for illegal contact of college players.

But what is the college to do? They already educate athletes and their families about the perils of dealing with agents. There is a possibility that they can lose their eligibility through agent contact. The university and the coaches cannot be in the back pocket of every player on their team. It is ultimately the player's responsibility to do the right thing.

Right now, the NCAA is trying to determine who paid for the trip for Marcel Dareus to Miami. That is to be determined. But one thing is for sure, Nick Saban is not happy!

In a statement by Coach Saban on the Dareus incident, "What the NFL Players Association and the NFL need to do is if any agent breaks a rule and causes ineligibility for a player, they should suspend his (agent's) license for a year or two," Coach Saban said. "I'm about ready for college football to say, 'Let's just throw the NFL out. Don't let them evaluate players. Don't let them talk to players. Let them do it at the combine.' If they are not going to help us, why should we help them?"

I have a feeling if a bad agent was to come around Nick Saban in Hoover, he might be willing to lay him out with a piledriver!

Trent Richardson's electric performance against Texas in the 2010 national championship game definitely turned some heads in the national media. The young horse of the punishing Alabama backfield is even getting talk as possible Heisman candidate for 2011. So therefore, it is not surprising that he is drawing comparisons to one of the most famous alumni at his former high school, Pensacola Escambia of Pensacola Florida, none other than Emmitt Smith.

Just like Richardson, Emmitt Smith career had somewhat of a slow start in his freshman year, but picked up steam as the year went on. It was actually that freshman year that he earned his first collegiate start in the 1987 SEC opener against Alabama in Birmingham. Unfortunately, Smith burned the Crimson Tide for 224 yards and 2 TDs in a win over Alabama. He later went on to bigger and better things and eventually became perennial All-Pro and Hall of Fame member of the NFL.

While there is much to be seen from Richardson before he can be honestly compared to Smith, the tools are there that make him a threat on any part of the field. At any other college in America, TR would be the starting running back and would have gotten a lot more carries. However, he did the smart thing by going to Alabama and saving his body by being a 1-2 punch that keeps his legs fresh way into the 4th quarter.

The running style is very similar, very elusive with strong upper body strength. It was on display with the stiff arms and upper body knockdowns of defenders such as the Arkansas sideline TD run that broke that game wide open. Not only that, he has speed to kill a defense. Texas got a big taste of that hole splitting speed when TR ripped the #1 ranked defense in the nation (according to stats) for a 49 yard run that was pretty much untouched.

He has the work ethic, the grit, the speed, the toughness, and he is even developing his pass catching skills as evidenced in the over-the-shoulder circus catch on the sideline of the 2010 Spring A-day game. While Mark Ingram truly showed why he is the #1 running back on the team, there isn't much of a drop off at all when TR touches the ball.

I am looking forward to seeing Trent as a sophomore phenom make defenses pay once again as Alabama marches toward trying to nail down its 14th national championship.

All I can say is that Trent Richardson is no ordinary running back, and it won't be too long until the comparisons to one of the top running backs in history will be inevitable if he continues to improve.   In fact, Sports illustrated just named TR as one of the breakout players of the year.  Check it out

Lindy’s Sports just released their preseason top 25 for football and guess who is on top? Of course, Alabama. I don't put much stock in preseason polls like Lindy's, but it is undeniable that Alabama is stacked. I just hope that the players don't get the big head and they stay hungry.

After that, they have Boise State at No. 2, with Ohio State, Texas & Florida closing out the top five. In the top 25, there is three others in Arkansas, LSU and Georgia (where's Auburn?? lol)

The college football preview magazine also has 4 Alabama players listed as preseason all-Americans. Topping the list is 2009 Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, followed by the second teamers of Mark Barron, Julio Jones, as well as Don’t’a Hightower.

You shouldn't be. Even though Alabama is losing 3 defensive line starters, Lorenzo Washington, Brandon Deaderick, and the big man in the middle, Terrence "Mount" Cody, there is plenty of defensive line experience coming up on the team.

The obvious hole in the defesive line that needs to be plugged this fall is the one by big All-American Mount Cody. A massive specimen of a player at 355 pounds, the big guy made it nearly impossible for teams to run up the middle of the Alabama defense. He was a force of nature (hence the nickname "Mount"), but another player who is coming along who is shaped like a bowling ball. His name is Josh Chapman, and he is poised to take his place at noseguard and make his mark on the 2010 Crimson Tide.

Josh Chapman, junior nosetackle, played a good bit in 2009 in third-down situations in order to rest Mount Cody. He has a a lot of game day experience and at 6'1" tall and 305 pounds, you can see why I say he is shaped to be like a bowling ball. Of course, he is not nearly as big as Cody, but what he lacks in size will be made up in strength and speed. He is widely considered on the team to be the strongest player in the weight room lifting close to 700 lbs. He also provides a lot pass rushing ability in the middle with more speed than Cody. I think Chapman will be a key cog in solidifying the defense for next year. .

One of the players that you might see battling with Chapman is Kerry Murphy. Kerry Murphy is the player that many wondered if he would ever get to Alabama. Murphy, like Chapman, came from the Alabama football powerhouse in Hoover (known nationally for its MTV reality show). both of these two players rotating in and out of the middle. A little taller player at 6'5" tall and a little heavier at 327 pounds, Kerry Murphy is no small fry. Both him and Chapman will be in the mix for nose guard in the 2010 football season. Nick Saban is working on Murphy now to improve his conditioning. Players on the team said that Murphy is a "crazy athlete." In fact, he can do back flips! Not just one either... but two in a row!

Chapman & Murphy are so highly regarded by their teammates, they are called "human earth movers." Think of bulldoziers... That is a really good sign that we are going to be strong in the middle of our D.

One of the top defensive lineman to be on lookout for this fall is junior Marcell Darius. Darius came out the gate this season with two tackles & 1.5 sacks against Virginia Tech in the season opener. Many around the Alabama Crimson Tide program think that Marcell Darius will ABSOLUTELY be the next great defensive lineman for the Crimson Tide. We got a little taste of this in the national championship game when he intercepted a pass for a touchdown and also knocked Colt McCoy out of the game. On top of that, he was in the face of the Texas quarterbacks all night long. He will be a force in his junior and senior years if he stays healthy.

Another player to watch is Damion Square. He actually did a great job on pass rushing duties last year until he hurt his knee. Most likely he's going to be limited in the spring, but you should see him full speed by fall.

Other backups who may be fighting for a job include Darrington Sentimore, William Ming,and Brandon Moore. Brandon Lewis a junior college signee from this years class could be an early force.

Folks we have the numbers, some even have some good playing experience, but I don't think we will see much of a drop-off in defensive line performance next fall. Saban has the talent deep at Alabama. Look for new players this year like Kerry Murphy or even one of the young redshirt freshman players like Brandon Lewis or William Ming to step and contribute.

On the defensive line, Alabama is simply reloading. Sure I hate to lose Mount Cody, but the future is bright! I can't wait to see 2010 and the new defensive front!
