Today, you will see everyone from the blond Bama twins to new recruits to fans donning the famous Houndstoooth hat.

Some college football historians think that the houndstooth hat was a regular part of his attire after Bryant won the 1965 national championship. Another story says that it was a gift from Bear Bryant's classmate at Alabama, the famous Yankee broadcaster, Mel Allen.

Two of the winningest coaches in Alabama history had their own styles and pyschological devices to motivate college football players. Bear Bryant & Nick Saban are very motivational in talking their players at in the locker room to get the best out of players. There are two videos that you can see below that provide a sample of what you would see in those pivotal moments when head coach speaks directly to the players.

It is no wonder that in both cases, you find that the players are hanging on every word that is spoken. They are fixated not only on the x's and o's, but the emotion of the moment.

Bear Bryant: Mastermind of Psychology

Bear was the mastermind of psychology. Even when Bama was down at halftime, Bear would make it look like we have them just where we want them. If we were winning, he would light into the players like we were losing. It was reverse psychology at its finest. He once said, "Don't give up at half time. Concentrate on winning the second half." He had a way of bringing players up when they were down and bring them down when they were up. There wasn't any big heads or dragging heads, players conducted themselves with class.

His presence alone was electric. Even his peers were in awe of the man, let alone the young men he coached. Joe Paterno was quoted as saying "Even his peers in the coaching business felt in awe of him.. He had such charisma. He was just a giant figure."

In the video, you can hear him say...

"Now, listen. This just makes it perfect. This just makes it perfect. We're behind. They're all fired up."

bearHe essentially was saying that Alabama had the opposing team, which was actually Florida State (who we trailed 24-22 at halftime), just where we want them. It puts in the minds of the players that they control their own destiny.

"We got class, we're going to find it out. We got class, and I know we got it. First place, our defense has got to go out there and take the ball. Our defense hasn't been taking the ball. Then, when we get the ball, we got to have 11 people -- 11 people that's just going to do their job, whatever it is. Just go do their job, and try to score every time you get the football.

If we do that, we'll be all right. If we do that, we'll be all right.

"OK, can we get together? All we need is somebody who wants to show some leadership out there! Now we go! Everybody's a leader!"

Nick Saban: Intense Motivator

Nick is intense like a drill sergeant preparing the troops for war. He is the master of bringing forth the passion of the moment to hype the players up to a frenzy that carries over to the field. Both him and Bear speak to the pride of the players. Where Bear called it “class”, Nick says that “they want to take what you got.” He pulls the bravado out of the players. His words are almost poetry made for war. The result are players coming out ready to bang heads with the opponent. He says his goal is to “dominate.”

"Passion, intensity, a sense of urgency... killer instinct ...its got to be coming from your heart... from your mind… in terms of how you are going to play… 60 minutes in a game… you gotta be ready to go out there and earn it guys... they want to take what you got, you gotta out out there and earn it. Every guy in here has to get it, whatever his goal is!"

Both coaches seem bigger than life when they are talking to their players. The end result is winning.

Hearing that Gene Stallings has added AL Crimson Tide.com fan page to profile is an honor. It made me think about the day that I had the opportunity to meet Coach Stallings and his son John Mark.

Where We Were

We were both at an Alabama Crimson Tide basketball game (Virginia I believe was playing us)  and I remember spotting him in the crowd. My wife and I were dating at the time, and we took the opportunity to walk over there and introduce ourselves.   In addition to his warm personality and the deep love, we could sense that he had for his son as he introduced us to him.   It's funny, I remember how big his hand seemed to swallow my little average hand shake. He also seemed very tall as he stood up out of his seat to greet us.

Warm Memories of Coach and His Son Jon Mark

Coach Stallings and his son were very cordial, and if memory serves me correctly, he asked the both of us if we were students at the University. We were actually junior college students at the time at Snead State, but we could tell coach loved the U of A.


John Mark was glowing as he was thoroughly enjoying watching the Crimson Tide basketball team play, we shook his hand as he nodded his head and gave us the biggest smile. He was a happy young man spending time with his personal hero, not the coach but the father who loved him.

BEAR BRYANT

The first person that you most likely think of when you hear something about Alabama football, it is likely you think of Bear Bryant. At one point, Bear Bryant was the winningest coach in college football ever. This legendary coach served the Crimson for 25 years. In this period of time, Brian was phenomenal with six national championships and 13 SEC conference championships.

Bear_BryantBear Bryant started his career at Alabama as a football player in 1931. He was only 1934 national championship play end. Brian always joked that he was the "other end" that played for "mamma". The other end was the legendary NFL Hall of Famer, Don Hudson. Even bear Bryant's college playing days, he showed mental toughness and playing the 1935 game against Tennessee with a broken leg.

As a head football coach, Bryant went through several college jobs such as the University of Maryland, University of Kentucky, and Texas A&M University before he finally had the opportunity to return to his alma mater, Alabama. So moved was Bear, that he famously was quoted as saying,

"Mama called. And when Mama calls, you just have to come runnin'."

It was the year 1958 that Bear Bryant took over the helm of the Crimson Tide, and started leaving it to its former Rose Bowl style glory but even to greater heights. Producing legendary players like Joe Namath, Pat Trammell, Billy Neighbors, Big John Hannah, snake Stabler,Lee Roy Jordan, Johnny Musso, Bob Baumhower, and many others.

Overall, Bear Bryant was a great motivator and you how to make his players do what he needed them to do. Florida A&M coach, Jake Gaither said of Bear Bryant,

 "He can take his'n and beat you'n, and he can take your'n and beat his'n."

The motivation wasn't just on the field, the motivation carried into real life as well by the character he instilled in his players like big John Croyle, who founded the Big Oak Ranch for kids in Springville, Alabama.

The last year that he coached Alabama, 1982, was a down year for Alabama and Bear couldn't see himself coaching Alabama into mediocrity. He always said that if he quit coaching that you "wouldn't last a week." In fact, he didn't last much longer than that, only 37 days. On January 26, 1983, took a Bryant died of a heart attack at age 69 and many mourned his death. Officials estimated that between a half-million to a million people were lined along the 53 mile stretch from Tuscaloosa to the cemetery in Birmingham that was blogs from Legion Field.

Bear's Legacy

Bear's legacy lives in the players that are now growing older and the fans that remember his championship heart. He helped break segregation in the South's football world, and in doing so, helped turn the state around from bigotry to glory. Not only that, he changed the world to a better place. Roll Tide!
