The yearly event prior to fall football camp in recent years is almost been like a circus. Some people even have said that it is like a New Year's Eve fireworks show for college sports.

Every year the lobby at Winfrey Hotel in Hoover Alabama seems to get packed with fans hoping to see players and coaches of their favorite teams up close.

Alabama fans are always leading the pack and this year will be even bigger with Alabama taking home a national championship and a Heisman Trophy. You can bet the Alabama fans will be there in full force to see Nick Saban and Mark Ingram and crew tomorrow as the first team to speak.

There is expected to be over 900 media members tomorrow. This is amazingly double the number that was there only four years ago. Much of this has been due to the proliferation of online media outlets.

Each of the football teams will have their head coach speak as well as three other members of the football team. This is an increase from the two members that has been brought to media days in the past.

You should be able to hear a lot of the same story from each of the coaches that you hear every year. Things like,

• "Everyone starts the year undefeated..",
• "This is a new year.."
• "Our team is untested.."
• "We are excited about the upcoming year.."
• "Our team has dramatically improved since last year.."
• "We have a new cast of football players that will have to prove themselves.."

You'll hear all this and a lot more from each of the coaches and players. However, the fans eat this stuff up every year. When SEC media days comes around every year, and when it does, it signals to fans that its not long until fall football camp. Fans get pumped. I know I do.

Then there are the controversies and surprises that always seem to get blown out of proportion and the media but is load of fun! Take for instance, Tim Tebow not getting a vote from one coach (Spurrier) last year. There was a big media ruckus over it because former Florida gator coach did not vote for the "best quarterback" to ever walk through the doors of the Winfrey motel! lol He was good but get real.. it wasn't that big of a deal! Fast forward to the end of the year and Alabama made him cry. Maybe he didn't deserve that last vote!

Former football coach Phil Fulmer in 2004 also had controversy when he didn't show up to SEC media days due to trying to elude a subpoena in Alabama. The very next year, they showed up after being fined 10 grand the year before..and oh by the way, he did get a subpoena as he walked in the front doors!

Look for Mark Ingram to be a very popular player tomorrow. Maybe the Alabama offensive line should block for him as he approaches the podium! It will be a throng of people wanting to be near the record braking tailback from Alabama. Journalists will be falling over each other trying to get at him. Same thing with Nick Saban, Greg McElroy, and Dont'a Hightower.

Florida will also be tomorrow. Should be very interesting in Hoover tomorrow to say the least!

Is Saban's success making the seat of Les Miles at LSU a little hotter by the minute? Not only has he had to sit back and watch Nick Saban built an empire from scratch Alabama, his own judgment in game management was called into question this past year due to some close losses based on time management. We are not saying that he was totally inept, but this past year also proved that he is not the best coach in America right now. Nick Saban is.

Thinking back to the national championship... One has to wonder, if Les Miles just stepped into a great situation at LSU once Nick Saban left for the Miami Dolphins. Was it because of Les Miles had oodles of coaching ability? In a way.. He had some gutsy 4th down conversions that went his way all year long.  But it can also be argued more than anything that the LSU team was liyterally stacked with talent in 2007 due to the superb recruiting done by Nick Saban in the past 4 years.

Let's look at the record of Les Miles since he began his tenure at LSU. Do you realize that Les Miles is only 8-8 in SEC play? Surprised?  This is not to say that he is not doing a good job at LSU.  In fact, his overall season records are not too bad at 11-2,11-2,12-2,8-5,9-4... but keep in mind that perception is more important than reality ...and preception is becoming a bad thing for Les these day.  But if you look at the facts, still you can't ignore the fact tha he has had a pedestrian 17-9 overall mark since the 2007 national championship season.

Only this last football season, Les Miles lost a couple of football games just because of game management.  A perfect example is how they should have beat Ole Miss. Trailing by two points, LSU had the ball on the Ole Miss 32 yard with a couple of timeouts and about a minute left. Instead of running the football and given the field-goal kicker a chance a chance (he had already hit a 50 yarder in this game), Les decided to get real cute by passing the ball three times in a row. They ended up losing yardage and burned both timeouts. With 9 seconds to go, the last time out I was called after wasting 17 seconds. With one second to go, Jefferson spiked the ball and time ran out. Within field goal range, and the players not knowing what to do.  Les had egg on his face as he first claimed he did not tell his QB to spike the ball, but video tape on youtube shows Les gesturing like a spike prior to the play.

Also... Who is looking down the barrel at another top-notch Alabama football team coming down the line and wondering what could have been? That's right. The LSU administrators and fan base have to be concerned about the direction that the LSU football program is taken in the last few years.  Even at the height of the 2007 season, LSU fans still seemed to have Saban on their minds. Les has never been overly popular, and things are not getting any better.

This is become such an issue that LSU Athletics apartment fundraiser Gary Bertman told the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper "No" when asked if Les Miles was on the hotseat. He said, "Criticism? Absolutely, positively, because he is making a lot of money. But hot seat?  no."

Time will tell.  Just the thought that the question is coming up, should alarm Les.  Just think, just a few years ago, Michigan alumni Rich Rodriguez (who Alabama origianlly wanted) and Les Miles were considered the whiz kids of college football. Demand was high for their services, but where do they stand now? Is Les like the proverbial frog in a warming pot that is getting undetectibly closer and closer to boiling point?  Time will tell.. meanwhile, Saban is cruising along working his process to perfection in Tuscaloosa... and putting some logs under the fire of the frog in a pot of water.

Can anyone say "hot seat?"

With a sense that Alabama's men's basketball is on the rise & the pressure of having to fill a new basketball gymasium at Auburn, the "university of auburn" decided it was time to cut the wildly unsuccessful men's basketball coach loose.  This is very evident when you consider that the program had a 35-61 overall SEC record under Lebo.  Overall, his overall record 96-93 over a weak schedule filled with 2nd rate teams, seems very pedestrian in hindsight. 

Auburn is now looking for a replacement with the ability to not only coach but also to milk cows.  The reason is a dual purpose.  President Jacobs said in a statement, "..we feel like the time has come for Auburn basketball to move in a new direction."   

Since they have always been known as the "cow college down the road" and it is time to get back to their roots.  Plus, they need to make a little extra money to support the new $90 million basketball gym...  they can't get anyone to buy tickets!  (Have you seen the price of milk these days???  LOL)

It's moments like this, when we all need to reflect on just how fragile life is.  In the prime of youth, playing a game he loved & thoroughly enjoyed, University of Mississippi football player Bennie F. Abram, 20, died following a team football workout in Oxford, Mississippi on Friday.  It was the first day of team workouts.  

Problems began not too long after practice started, as trainers worked with the young man having breathing difficulties.  Not long after that, however, trainers realized that a more dire situation was on their hands.  They began administering first aid and called 911.  Unfortunely, it was too little too late.   Abram did get to the hospital, yet died several hours later.  

Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy stated that there will be autopsy done today to determine the cause of death.  It has been ruled out that there was any foul play involved.

By scheduling fenagling that could only be compared to origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, 6 opposing SEC teams have been able to change their schedules in order to be optimally rested for the national champions. Does this sound fair? It doesn't sound like it to me either, and although I know life is not fair, it does seem like there should be some rules made by the SEC to keep this from happening to any one particular team whether it be Vanderbilt or Alabama.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive needs to look at the rules of scheduling for the SEC teams, and make sure that there is even scheduling of bye weeks for all teams in the SEC. Alabama athletic director Mal Moore already has raised a a red flag by requesting a review of this issue at a meeting of SEC athletic directors back in December.  The SEC needs to make sure that all SEC teams are scheduled fairly amongst each other from year-to-year so as to not disadvantage or advantage one SEC over another.

With that said, I still think we'll beat the crap out of everybody else anyway! LOL

Breaking news today that Tennessee All-America junior safety Eric Berry is entering the NFL draft.  Many are projecting him as the #1 draft pick.  With mixed feelings, he said that "It's so hard because I don't want to go but I feel I have to."  His parents are both laid off, therefore leading to the decision to move on.

Does it seem like the wheels are coming off of Lane Kiffin's team in a hurry? Court records were revealed Tuesday that a fourth Tennessee player, freshman Nyshier Oliver, has been charged with shoplifting on 1:45 p.m. on Nov. 7, hours before the TN/Memphis game.  The court appearance is scheduled on Nov. 23.   According to the court records, a $110 brown polo shirt was lifted from a local Dillards department store.

The citation occurred on Information about this comes forth after the 3 player robbery attempt at a local Knoxville gas station. Meanwhile two of the three players involved in the armed robbery were dismissed from the team.  (Also, good move by Kiffin in weeding out the armed robbery suspects..  do it before the law does it anyway. )

In statement from head Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin on the dismissals,

"Our No. 1 rule is to protect the team," Kiffin said. "As the head coach, I have to make decisions that sometimes you don't want to make. It was a sad day yesterday for those two kids. I wish them the best of luck. They obviously made a very poor decision. We can't allow that to be a part of our team. That decision-making can't be anywhere near what we are doing."

All I can say is that was one "steal" of a freshman class that Kiffin brought in! All kidding aside, I hope that TN gets things straightened out, the SEC doesn't need this kind of publicity.
