The SEC office announced yesterday that the University of Alabama placed 56 student-athletes on the 2011 Fall Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, the second highest total in the conference, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced Wednesday.

Thirty-eight of those athletes were football players which was the most for any school in the conference. Those players who were recognized included: Trent Richardson, Mark Barron, Barrett Jones, Marquis Maze, Jeremy Shelley, Brad Smelley and Jesse Williams.

Maybe Coach Saban can send this release to Landon Collins' mother to ease her mind that Alabama is more then just a football factory.

A four game losing streak, players not playing hard and bad shooting are just a few reasons why this team is struggling, but let's get to the real reason why the Tide is having a hard time; the lack of passion from some of the players.

Coach Anthony Grant won't say the names, but if you watch the games folks you know exactly who he is talking about; Tony Mitchell and JaMychal Green. Green was a problem last year and Grant sat him for a few games which seem to get him back on track.

But since he has come back from his injury, Green has struggled to produce from the field. He had one big game so far and that was against Kentucky when he scored 20 points, so he may have an excuse for his bad player; Mitchell doesn't.

Mitchell seems like he cares more about his NBA career then playing which is what Coach Grant was hinting about. He takes off plays, at times doesn't play good defense and has gotten the big head since he appears on Sportscenter a lot because of his dunking ability.

I'm guilty of gushing over his abilities as well because he is a darn good player. I just he would be more team oriented then self oriented. I've even heard some Tide fans say this morning they'd rather sit Green and Mitchell in favor of the freshman because they seem to play better and I can't argue with that.

But if you do that, you giving up on the season and the season is far from being over. But Grant is going to have to do something to get their attention and maybe he needs to sit Mitchell until he gets his head screwed back on tight.

Don't give up on tis team yet folks, they are talented enough to make a run as they did last year and end up in the NCAA Tournament, but the winning streak has to start somewhere and let's hope it starts Saturday against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

In a game when it the Tide needed to come up big, they didn't. Bama lost to South Carolina 56-54 on a last second shot by the Gamecocks.

The big three, Trevor Releford, Tony Mitchell and JaMychal Green, again struggled from the field; Mitchell and Green combined for just 17 points.

Freshman Levi Randolph lead the team with 12 points and Nick Jacobs added 10 points. The Tide's lack of production and passion was not lost on Tide head coach Anthony Grant.

"From my vantage point tonight, you had a team in South Carolina that played inspired basketball," Grant said. "They played as a team. We didn't.

Grant was just getting started.

"It's been an issue for us, and it continues to plague us," Grant said. "We play an entitled brand of basketball, and it's very frustrating as a coach. And for me right now, I have to self-evaluate what I'm doing as a coach when it consistently feels like winning is not the priority that it needs to be on our team. So we've got to re-evaluate what we're doing as a coaching staff."

Coach Grant better hurry up and evaluate what's wrong with this team before they find themselves totally out of the NCAA Tournament. The Tide's next game will be against Arkansas Saturday.

For those of you who didn't know, the Frozen Tide is a pretty good team that is currently ranked No. 3 in the country in the Collegiate Hockey Association’s South region standings. They play all their home games at the Pelham Civic Center which for those of you who aren't familiar, that is near Birmingham.

The Frozen Tide (6-0-0 SECHC) is currently tied with Arkansas (6-1-0) in the SECHC West Standings with 12 points. The teams will likely settle the Western Division when they meet during the last weekend of the regular season for a pair of games in Arkansas in February.

Besides Arkansas, other SEC teams they compete against include Tennessee and Auburn which they have swept this year.

If you want to cheer on the Frozen Tide, they play their next three home games against South Carolina, Central Florida and Georgia before ending their season at Arkansas. Checkout out www.bamahockey.net for more information.

In the Tide's last game against the Kentucky Wildcats, Bama shot well from the field, but it still wasn't enough to win the game.

One of the problems has been the lack of production from Tony Mitchell who has struggled recently. It seems that when Mitchell is on his game, the Tide wins games, but when he is off, they lose.

The Tide freshman on the other hand, have stepped up their game. Levi Randolph and Trevor Lacey have been impressive this season so far and the Tide will need their production if they are to contend for an NCAA Tournament bid.

The Gamecocks are on a four game losing streak. They are led by senior forward Malik Cooke. He leads the team in scoring at 12.2 points per game and sophomore Bruce Ellington who is the team's second leading scorer, adding 10 points per game.

Despite their struggles, the Gamecocks seem to play better at home and like the Tide, have lost a few close contest. Bama has struggled at times on the road and they do not need to fall asleep on this Gamecock team or they will find themselves in a deeper hole by the end of the night.

The Tide and Gamecocks tip-off tonight at 7 p.m. cst check your local listings.

The Tide will start the season as the No. 2 team in the country behind No. 1 Arizona State in the USA Today College Softball Poll.

The Crimson Tide, which finished last season with a 53-11 record, were ranked No. 3 after their semifinal run in the Women’s College World Series last year.

Tide head coach Patrick Murphy said "To be No. 2 or No. 3 in the country preseason is a great honor, but our group knows it is just the beginning

It was a strange offseason for the Tide which saw coach Patrick Murphy leave the program for SEC rival LSU only to decide to change his mind and come back to Tuscaloosa.

Despite the slight upheaval during the offseason, this looks like another banner year for Tide softball. Bama will open its season in the Mardi Gras Invitational in Mobile starting Feb. 10-12.

Bama did lose to the Wildcats 77-71, but showed heart in the loss.

The Tide was led by JaMychal Green who had 22 points and Trevor Releford who added 17 points all in second half. Releford was the talk of the game with his circus like shots and his three-point shooting. The Tide shot much better from the field shooting 48 percent over all including 5-7 from the three-point line.

Kentucky was up by as many as eight in the game, but everytime it looked like the Wildcats were about to run away with the game, the Tide would make a run themselves and cut the lead to as many as a single point in the second half. But the Wildcats would close out the game with their free throw shooting.

While they struggled for most of the game from the free throw line, when it was crunch time, the Wildcats came through and they would need every last point to hold off the Tide.

Kentucky head coach John Calipari said his team was “lucky to be in the game.”

Tide head coach Anthony Grant summed up the loss this way:

I thought our guys certainly gave the effort and played with the passion that as a coach you want to see. Unfortunately, we weren't able to make the plays that we needed to make down the stretch to win the game."

Since this is the down period so to speak until the BCS Championship game the rumor mill is churning.. One of the rumors out there is that the Miami Dolphins are interested in LSU head coach Les Miles.

Miles is reportedly one of 11 candidates up for the job, a charge Miles denies.

“He wanted everyone to know that he is not interested in the Miami job,” LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette said Wednesday after speaking to Miles. “He said he is full steam ahead for the national championship and not interested in any other job.”

This has to be a nightmare for LSU fans to know that the Dolphins are even CONSIDERING Miles for the Dolphins job.

If Miles does win the national championship, expect the wolves to be at his door because quite frankly what is there for him to do at the college level?

And keep in mind ladies and gents that Miles did work for the Dallas Cowboys at one point too and there are rumblings that Cowboys coach Jason Garrett may be in trouble if the Cowboys miss the playoffs again this year.

I’m not saying Les Miles is going anywhere, but don’t be surprised if his name is brought up a lot in the next few months for other coaching positions.
