Sporting News List 2009 Alabama Team as One of the Best

By

The Sporting News did a list of the top 10 best teams of the BCS Era, and the 2009 Crimson Tide came in at No. 5.

Here is what was said in the Sporting News article about the team:

It hardly was a rags-to-riches story for the 2009 Crimson Tide, but they were competing in an SEC West division that wasn’t entirely unlike the SEC East was seen throughout the 2011 season. The conference, to be sure, was expected all along to belong to top-ranked defending national champion Florida, which rolled into Atlanta for the SEC title game at 12-0.

The 32-13 score still awakens the senses. The Tide, who started that season ranked fifth but, likewise 12-0, had risen to No. 2, owned Tim Tebow and the Gators that day. (“He’s a great player,” Bama wideout Julio Jones said afterward, “but, man, we’re tired of him.”)

Sophomore running back Mark Ingram, who would win the Heisman Trophy a week later, rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns and had a 69-yard gain on a screen pass. The defense, led by Butkus award-winning linebacker Rolando McClain and massive tackle Terrence Cody, was typically stellar.

As it turned out, the BCS title game against No. 2 Texas in Pasadena, Calif., wasn’t much more than a formality. Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus knocked Texas star quarterback Colt McCoy out of the game for good on the Longhorns’ opening possession; it was 24-6 by the half and 37-21 at the end—the Tide’s first national championship since 1992.

Nick Saban’s 2003 LSU Tigers also made the list; one team that didn’t make it; the 2010 Auburn Tigers.
