In the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic, Alabama routed the Maryland Terrapins 62-42 behind Tony Mitchell’s 17 points.

The Tide and Mitchell got off to a hot start leading at one point 8-1. That is about as close as Maryland would get for the rest of the game. The Terps only shot 26 percent for the game and had zero players in double figures in scoring.

While all this was taking place, Tide leading scorer JaMychal Green sat on the bench. Green got in early foul trouble and was really no factor in the game which makes this victory even more amazing.

“We are a better team with JaMychal on the floor, but Tony gave us a great performance throughout the game,” Alabama coach Anthony Grant said. “I thought everyone had their minds focused on the game tonight.”

Mitchell scored 15 of his 17 points came in the first half, but he was 3-4 from the three-point line and 7-12overall. Trevor Releford added 10 points.

Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon summed up the way his team played with this comment: “We were a train wreck falling off a cliff in the first half.”

The Tide will have a rematch with Wichita State who defeated them last season in the finals of the NIT. The game will be 9:00 tonight.
