1992 Alabama-Mississippi State Game

By

When you talk Alabama-Mississippi State football, you normally talk about dominance by the Tide. But in the 1992 game which would turn out to be the year of Alabama’s run for the national championship, the State game turned out to be closer then one would think.

Mississippi's coach at the time was a former Alabama player, Jackie Sherrill. Jackie Sherrill played for Bear Bryant in the 60's and helped Alabama win two national championships.

The Tide would take an early lead against the Bulldogs 20-3 with a touchdown from quarterback Jay Barker to running back Derrick Lassic, an Antonio Langham blocked punt for a touchdown and two field goals.

But Mississippi State would make a comeback with Bama turnovers and the offense stalling, the Bulldogs would capitalize on the opportunities to cut the Tide lead to 20-18 and at one point, the Bulldogs even took the lead over the Tide 21-20 but that would be it for them.

The defense would buckle down and force the Bulldog into mistakes which would turn the game around for the Tide as they would pull away 30-21 preserving Alabama’s undefeated season.

Alabama was 11-0 and the win was very sweet indeed.
