Alabama Hires Mike Groh As Assistant Coach

By

Mike Groh, former graduate assistant at Alabama in 2009, will be returning to the Capstone as a full-time assistant coach after coaching last season on Louisville's staff. Groh will be replacing Curt Cignetti on Alabama's staff as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

“We are excited to have Mike join our staff,” Coach Nick Saban said in a statement, “He did an outstanding job here a year ago and when he left, he was one that I hoped we could bring back to Alabama at some point.”

Cignetti, was was hired recently to be the head coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Groh coached the QBs at Louisville, however he worked with receivers at Alabama in 2009. After the 2008 season, Groh was forced out of the offensive coodinator position under his dad, Al Groh (you can call him BIG AL...just kidding!) after the 2008 season.

Former Mississippi State head coach Sylvester Croom was in the running for the Cognetti position but wasn't hired by Saban.

I believe this is a great pick-up for the Tide, because Mike knows Alabama and he has good experience teaching receivers & QBs. Add that to the fact that Groh has great recruiting connections on the eastern seaboard, plenty of youthful energy, and he brings new blood to a young receivers corp that needs to make a statement next year without Julio to lead them. Those are skills he has that are incredibly valuable and I think that Nick Saban made the right choice.
